Authorities held 1,300 students, teachers, and first responders beginning on Wednesday for testing by the Environmental Protect Agency after a small amount of mercury was found, according to The Associated Press.

Hundreds of parents waited outside after students were held for up to 17 hours to screen for neurotoxin exposure after a student brought the substance to Walter Johnson Junior High School on Wednesday.

“They were laughing. They were talking. They were really, really upbeat,” fire department spokesman Tim Szymanski said of students’ morale. “The kids didn’t complain or seem out of it. I was there really, really late and I was really amazed at their attitude.”

No mercury-related illnesses were reported but parents were critical over how information was shared and the severity of the response.

Authorities said that they needed to confirm that no one went home contaminated, once that was the case they dismissed everyone and cancelled school through Friday.

The EPA is still evaluating the best way to decontaminate the school, which could take a week to check the entire property and screen al of the student and faculty personal belongings before they can be returned.
