Veterans’ christmas party
The Cayman Islands Veterans Association Christmas party at the Seafarers Hall, Prospect, party was a great opportunity to meet old friends and comrades.
Everyone enjoyed a lovely meal provided by Luz’s Restaurant and organized by Mrs. Beverly Banks.
Entertainment was provided by ‘Aunt Sookie and Zekiel,’ two much-loved Cayman comedy characters who try to make sense out of modern life, played by Daphne Orrett and Carlyle Ebanks.
But it wasn’t just former soldiers, sailors and airmen and their families and friends who were able to get together and exchange stories over turtle stew and a drink or two. Two past Governors, Athel Long CMG, CBE (First Governor of the Cayman Islands between 1971 and 1972) and Thomas Russell (Governor between 1974 and 1981) were both able to rub shoulders with Governor Duncan Taylor, who is the Veterans Association’s Patron.
Association President Capt. Dale Banks welcomed the Governor:
“We really are honoured to have you and your wife with us,” he said.
Governor Taylor replied: “I’m delighted to have not one but two of my illustrious predecessors and I take great comfort from the fantastic shape that Governor Russell and Governor Long are in. I conclude that there must be something really great about being able to live in, and be governor of, the Cayman Islands.”
During the evening, Mr. Charles Adams OBE was recognized for his 27 years of service as Association secretary, and although he will be retiring from that office, Mr Adams will still be available to provide legal advice to the Association.
Everyone was reminded of the Association’s purpose by reference to the recent poppy appeal, which engages the public in helping to provide much-needed funds for supporting the veterans throughout the year.
