U.S. entrepreneurs travel to Latin America and the Caribbean for YLAI Reverse Exchange Program

Thirty-four Young Leaders of the Americans Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellowship hosts from businesses and civil society organizations across the United States have been selected to participate in the Reverse Exchange program, a new component of YLAI. This year, the U.S. Fellowship hosts will travel to 21 countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to collaboratively implement entrepreneurial and community projects alongside alumni of the YLAI Professional Fellows Program. These partnerships will strengthen entrepreneurship networks between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean.
In November 2016, the YLAI alumni completed five-week fellowships at U.S. start-ups, small businesses, and various organizations in partnership with businesses, community groups and universities. Through the Reverse Exchange program, many of the Fellowship hosts will continue to mentor the YLAI alumni in-country to further develop their business or social venture plans. YLAI is administered by the U.S. Department of State in collaboration with Meridian International Center.

Marriott, Sandals bring AC Hotel brand to Caribbean, Latin America

The 220-key AC Kingston will mark the arrival of the AC Hotels by Marriott brand in the Caribbean when it opens in Jamaica in 2019. Sandals Resorts International and Marriott International negotiated for a year before settling on how to jointly expand the AC Hotels brand to the Caribbean and Latin America.

Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival Issues Call For Caribbean Films

Port of Spain, Trinidad – The trinidad+tobago film festival (ttff) has issued a call for films from or about the Caribbean and its diaspora.
Filmmakers wishing to have their film screened at the twelfth edition of the Festival, should make their submission no later than May 15.
The 2017 Festival takes place from September 19 – 26, with film screenings in several venues in both Trinidad and Tobago.
The ttff seeks to highlight excellence in Caribbean filmmaking through the exhibition of short and feature length films. The Festival therefore accepts submissions from Caribbean filmmakers, Caribbean filmmakers in the diaspora, and international filmmakers with films from or about the Caribbean or its diaspora. Submissions must have been produced after January 1, 2015.
Films screened in competition are eligible for one or more jury prizes and there are also several people’s choice awards.
The ttff seeks to make all screenings at the Festival T&T premieres, however, occasionally the Festival considers films that have already been shown publicly in Trinidad and Tobago.
The submission deadline of May 15, 2017, and the stated criteria, will be strictly adhered to. There is no submission fee.

Caribbean, Mexico hotel development pipeline upticks

According to STR’s January 2017 Pipeline Report, more than 33,830 rooms in 199 hotel projects are under contract in the Caribbean and Mexico. The total represents a 4.4% increase in rooms under contract compared with January 2016.
Under contract data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the unconfirmed stage.
These two regions reported 12,818 rooms in 81 projects In Construction for the month. Based on number of rooms, that is a 9.4% decrease in year-over-year comparisons.
Among these region’s key markets, Central Mexico (4,741 rooms in 36 projects) reported the largest number of rooms In Construction.

Royal Caribbean cruise ship departs Florida after day delay

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — A Royal Caribbean cruise ship set sail from Florida on Tuesday, a day later than scheduled because of problems with life jackets.
The Majesty of the Seas set sail from Port Canaveral after a 24 hour delay caused by a U.S. Coast Guard inspection that found some of the ship’s life jackets were showing their age.
The life jackets were replaced with new ones, Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said.

A SAN Fernando pastor was arrested in Sangre Grande for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14 year old girl.
The 26-year old pastor, of Pleasantville, was allegedly caught in the act by police officers.
On Tuesday, residents informed police that a child dressed in school uniform was allegedly seen in a man’s vehicle on their street.
Officers responded and allegedly found the man having sex with the school girl under an almond tree at the side of the road.
The pastor was taken into custody by the Sangre Grande police, and the girl was interviewed by officers of the Child Protection Unit.
The suspect was expected to be charged with statutory rape.
He is expected to appear before a Sangre Grande magistrate.

Disabling diseases and injuries, including those for which there is a terminal diagnosis, are tragic. However, there is no such thing as a life not worth living. Every life holds promise, even if disadvantaged by developmental disability, injury, disease, or advanced aging. FRC believes that every human life has inherent dignity, and that it is unethical to deliberately end the life of a suffering person (euthanasia), or assist or enable another person to end their life (assisted suicide). While extraordinary means of life support, such as assistance with respiration and heart function, may be withdrawn from a terminally ill person if that is the person’s expressed wish, nutrition and hydration are normal and are not extraordinary means of maintaining life, and severe disability is not the same as terminal illness. True compassion means finding ways to ease suffering and provide care for each person, while maintaining the individual’s life and dignity.

Trinidad bandit robs man of $700, but returns $20

A sympathetic gunman who had just robbed a man of $700, apparently felt sorry for his victim and gave back $20, so he could travel home.
The robbery happened outside CCN’s Pointe a Pierre Road, San Fernando headquarters at around 3.10a.m.
The victim said that he was standing on the pavement when a man approached him and pointed a firearm.
The thief allegedly told him: “You see what I have here. What you have?”.
While handing over his cash the victim told thief that he had no money to travel home.
The thief then handed the man $20 and ran off.
A report was made to the San Fernando CID.

Defense attorneys have sounded the alarm on what they say is a new strategy by lenders and plaintiffs lawyers designed to prey on seniors: sue to foreclose on government-guaranteed home loans under various defaults, then fast-track these suits by filing motions for orders to show cause. These motions shift the burden of proof to the borrower, requiring them to appear in court and explain why a judge shouldn’t grant final judgment against them. “All of a sudden, we saw a spate of foreclosures where the mortgage companies alleged the seniors no longer lived in the home,” said Gladys Gerson, supervising attorney for Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida’s senior unit. Florida is ground zero for seniors’ issues, but the strategy has often proved effective, meaning it’s likely to spread, according to defense attorneys.

No, according to Sorensen. “The reality…is that general counsel and other lawyers in the legal department are employees. And as the Bio-Rad case illustrates, they have many of the same rights that nonlegal employees have, including the ability to claim they were wrongfully terminated in retaliation for engaging in whistleblower activities,” he said.

David Willey to miss Caribbean tour next month

London, Feb 14 : Indian cricketer David Willey will miss England’s three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against the West Indies in the Caribbean next month.
The Yorkshire all-rounder had surgery on his left shoulder on Friday to further assess the injury he sustained while bowling in the third ODI against India last month, the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.
He has suffered a partial tear of a tendon and will be out of action until April, the board said.
He will be replaced by Steven Finn.
England will fly to the Caribbean next Wednesday.
England will play two warm-up matches and three ODIs against the West Indies in the upcoming days.

Fox News: North Korea’s Missile Designed to Launch From Submarine

North Korea’s missile that it claims it tested over the weekend is designed to launch from a submarine, U.S. officials told Fox News on Monday.
Officials said the KN-11-mod-2 missile was launched in the northwest region of North Korea Saturday evening and traveled around 300 miles into the Sea of Japan.
The missile test this weekend happened around the same time as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s appearance in the U.S. with President Donald Trump.
The missile traveled farther than any other missile that North Korea has launched, according to a Pentagon spokesman.
The launch was a “clear grave threat to our national security,” Capt. Jeff Davis said, according to Fox News.
Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s 33-year-old dictator, witnessed the launch in person, officials said.
The U.S. Navy has stationed two warships in the Sea of Japan in the last few weeks as part of a “heightened presence,” one official said.
While this test did not worry U.S. officials, the possibility of North Korea wielding an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States in the future is a concern, according to the report.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry weighed in on the launch.
“Given the current circumstances, relevant parties should not engage in mutually provocative moves which could heighten regional tensions. All parties need to exercise restraint in a joint effort to maintain regional peace and stability,” spokesman Geng Shuang said.

Police Investigating reports of alleged Jamaican rapist in Antigua

ST JOHN’S , Antigua, Feb 09 2017 – The police are investigating reports that a Jamaican man, accused of rape, has been seeking refuge here.
The Antigua Observer reports that a photograph has been making the rounds for several weeks, via social media, warning females in particular, to be on the lookout for the Jamaican.
The man is accused of allegedly raping someone in Jamaica and is believed to be on the run.
Police spokesman Inspector Frankie Thomas said the police are aware of the report.
“We have no concrete information to suggest that this man is in the country, but notwithstanding that we will continue to do our own investigation, even if it means we have to get in touch with our counterparts in Jamaica and work along with other law enforcement agencies,” Thomas said.
Jamaica: No bail for Alkaline

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Feb 11 2017 – Alkaline has spent another night at the Hunts Bay Police Station’s lock-up in Kingston.
According to the dancehall deejay’s lawyer Peter Champagnie, he has not been charged.
“He remains in custody of the police. However, if he’s not released before Monday, I’ll be going to court to file a writ of habeas corpus,” Champagnie said.
Habeas corpus is a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person’s release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.
On Thursday morning, Alkaline (real name is Earlan Bartley) reported to the Area Four Headquarters at Harman Barracks in Vineyard Town, accompanied by his lawyer. The deejay was wanted for questioning in relation to the murder of Rohan Morris in Maverley on January 13.
After an extensive interview with detectives, he was removed to the Criminal Investigation Branch office at the National Commercial Bank Towers in New Kingston for a second session.
By afternoon, he was detained at the Hunts Bay lock-up.

794 lbs of cocaine worth $62M washes up on English beach

British police say 794 pounds (360 kilograms) of cocaine with a street value of up to 50 million pounds ($62 million) has washed up on beaches in eastern England.
The National Crime Agency said the drugs were found in duffel bags on two beaches near Great Yarmouth, 140 miles (220 kilometers) northeast of London.
Matthew Rivers, from the crime agency’s border investigation team, said Friday that police, border officials and coast guards are investigating how the bags ended up on the beaches. He said “it is extremely unlikely that this was their intended destination.”
Norfolk Police Superintendent Dave Buckley said members of the public should contact the force if they find any more bags of drugs.

Elections officials are urging all Caymanians who plan to vote in the General Elections on 24 May 2017 to check the revised voter details, published in the Electors’ List, before 20 February 2017. You can go online at www.elections.ky or visit in person any post office on all three islands to access and check the list.
The last date for receiving claims or objections to the published revised voters’ list is 20 February. The public review period for making claims and objections is a vital step in publishing an accurate list of electors for the General Elections.
The final list will be published on 1 April. Only those on that final list will be eligible to vote in May.

Join us for a special maritime tour with the Cayman Islands National Museum (CINM) and the Cayman Catboat Club Museum (CCCM). The special event kicks off at CINM at 5:30 PM with a cocktail reception and open house of the museum’s latest exhibition, Legends of Scuba Diving. Then head to the Catboat Club for a special fish fry and tour of the facility. Go behind the scenes and learn all about maritime history and culture with museum professionals and catboat specialists. Watercolour Collage – Workshop for Adults

Join artist John Broad at the National Gallery and dive into the art of watercolour collage. This one day workshop invites participants to experiment with a variety of watercolour techniques and layer them into a maritime-themed piece inspired by the new exhibition Saltwater in Their Veins. Beach-combing & Assemblage Art with Chris Mann
Saturday, 1 April 2017, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Led by artist Chris Mann this workshop invites participants to create an environmental assemblage art piece which tells a story. Bring your beach-combing collection (driftwood, plastics, shells, bottles, fishing nets, etc., to produce your very own work of art while learning about form, narratives, and assemblage art. The workshop is $80.00 (members receive a 10% discount). Participants are asked to bring a piece of driftwood to create the base of their work as well as additional collected items from the beach. A Plastic Ocean – Film Screening
Saturday, 1 April 2017, Screenings at 3:30 PM, 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM
Released in 2016, A Plastic Ocean is an adventure documentary shot on more than 20 locations over four years. Explorers Craig Leeson, the film’s director, and Tanya Streeter, British-Caymanian-American world champion free diver, and a team of international scientists reveal the causes and consequences of plastic pollution and share solutions. Admission is free and refreshments including popcorn will be served. Donations welcome. Seating is on a first come first-served basis. National Gallery offers guided tours to enhance your experience and offer memorable moments. Led by NGCI curators or educators, tours provide additional insights and tell the stories behind the works of art and artists who created them. The access road is located off of Lawrence Boulevard and passes through the F.J. Harquail Cultural Grounds (Harquail Theatre). About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.

NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.

Issuance of Cayman Islands Voter IDs Starts 1 April
In response to a number of queries, Elections officials state that they will start issuing Voter ID cards from 1 April 2017.
The revised voters’ list is scheduled to be out on 31 March incorporating all the verified changes and new registrations. This will be formalized in the final list of voters on 1 April. Following this, the new IDs will be issued.
Existing voters will have their verified details and photograph transferred on to their new cards which they will have to pick up at Elections Headquarters on Smith Road.
New registrants will need to have their photos taken by the Elections Office prior to the Electors ID cards being issued to them.

he Hon. Consul of Barbados, Mrs Juliette Gooding-Michelin, GCM, will launch a new book on Barbadian migration to Cuba on Friday 24th February at 6:00pm on at St George’s Anglican Church Hall, Courts Road, off Eastern Ave., George Town.
The book, “Tell My Mother I Gone to Cuba: Stories of Early Twentieth-Century Migration from Barbados” (University of the West Indies Press) is authored by Dr. Sharon Marshall.
