Watch Daredevils climb the highest bridge in England in this nail-biting video
BY APRIL HAUTEA From Mashable
We can’t determine if this is brave or just plain idiotic.
In the video at link below, a group of daredevils from the Youtube channel Night Scape film themselves scaling the Humber Bridge in Grimsby, England. The guys climb the beams and wires in the vertigo-inducing footage and make it to the top in time to watch the sun rise.
We don’t recommend that you try this at home. Keep your two feet on the ground where possible, please.
The bounty of snakes
By Paul McGowan PS Audio
If I were to offer to heal your arthritis with snake oil you’d likely laugh—but that would be a mistake. Snake oil in its original form works wonders.
In the 1800s Chinese railroad workers flooded the west to build the Transcontinental railroad and they brought with them their potions and medicines—among them was liniment made from the oil of the Chinese water snake, which is rich in the omega-3 acids that help reduce inflammation. Word of this amazing remedy started to spread and people wanted to purchase this rare substance.
Enter Clark Stanley, better known as the Rattle Snake King who managed to forever taint the good name of Snake Oil. Stanley would tour the country selling his version of the Chinese medicine. When a group of onlookers gathered he would reach into a sack, pluck out a snake, slit it open and plunge it into boiling water. When the fat rose to the top, he skimmed it off and used it on the spot to create ‘Stanley’s Snake Oil,’ a liniment that was immediately snapped up by those gathered to watch the spectacle.
There were two problems with Stanley’s product: rattlesnake oil isn’t beneficial like the water snake, and most of the oil Stanley sold wasn’t actually from snakes. In fact, his oil was a scam, made from beef fat, red pepper, and turpentine—nasty stuff to rub on your skin.
In 1916, subsequent to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906, Stanley’s concoction was examined and found to be of no value. He was fined $20.00 and went on to other fine endeavors of public “interest”.
The next time someone says they think “it’s just snake oil” we are reminded that might not be a bad thing.

Cayman Islands police inform about spike in burglaries in Bodden Town Area, 17 May
The RCIPS has seen a steady increase in burglaries on Grand Cayman in the month of May, with over half of the reports island-wide occurring in Bodden Town. The burglaries have been largely residential and occurring during the daytime, when residents are at work, some have also taken place on commercial premises, mostly at night.
“Burglaries have been climbing steadily this year, and the spike in Bodden Town is a concern,” said Pete Lansdown, Detective Superintendent, “we have dedicated more officers to the Eastern Districts to combat this trend, and detectives are being reassigned from George Town to the district this week. We clearly have some serial burglars at work in the area and are following up on some concrete enquiries to make arrests.”
Smashing windows, forcing doors open and making holes through ceilings have been the general modes of entry for commercial properties, while unlocked doors and windows, and forced doors and windows, have been the modes of entry for residential properties. In the case of many of the residential burglaries and especially those in Bodden Town, the property stolen has been small and portable, such as video games and equipment, X-boxes, purses, car keys (with cars subsequently taken and later recovered) small quantities of cash, and alcohol and food. As of last week several thefts of motor vehicles have begun to occur that are linked to the burglaries. Thefts from several parked cars have also been reported.
“We have had reports where car keys were stolen and used to steal a vehicle, which has turned up a day or two later, sometimes with damage,” continued Det. Superintendent Lansdown. “Many of the burglaries seem very opportunistic, with culprits entering through unlocked doors and windows to steal food and alcohol. This could be motivated by drug and alcohol abuse. Most of the burglaries, especially those in Bodden Town, don’t appear to be planned with any of the sophistication that would be needed to remove large appliances or break open safes.”
Yesterday evening, 16 May, just past 11PM the brown Kia Optima (#144572) reported stolen on Sunday was recovered at a location on Sitwell Road in Bodden Town. Two slim males who appeared to be in their 20s were seen to have been walking away from the vehicle before police arrived. Anyone who have may have seen these men and have any further information should contact the Bodden Town Police Station at 947-2240.
Police are urging residents to reinforce or replace old locks on windows and doors, and secure items such as car keys and purses in the home away from open windows or doors. Neighbourhood officers at Bodden Town Police Station can also assist residents with a crime prevention review of their homes.
There are three active neighbourhood watch programmes in the Bodden Town area, namely in Northward, Corolla Drive, and North Sound Estates. Those residents who would like to enquire about these programmes or start their own, or are seeking any crime prevention advice, are encouraged to call the Bodden Town Police Station to speak with neighbourhood officers.
“In recent weeks three new neighbourhood watches have begun in George Town, and we’d like to repeat this in Bodden Town, to add to the active ones we already have,” said Inspector Rudi Gordon, Neighborhood Inspector for the Eastern Districts. “Neighbourhood watches are a great way for residents to empower themselves and funnel more information to us that we need to stop crime.”
A community meeting will be scheduled in Bodden Town with the Commissioner of Police, Derek Byrne, in the near future to discuss burglary issues and other policing concerns with residents.
Anyone who may have any information about the recent burglaries in Bodden Town can contact the Bodden Town Police station at 947-2240 or the George Town Police Station at 949-4222. Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via our Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online at the link: https://www.tipsubmit.com/WebTips.aspx?AgencyID=681.

Precise vs. accurate
By Paul McGowan From PS Audio
There’s a difference between precise and accurate. Weather predictions are often precise in their reporting of facts but wrong in their final outcome. Or, take digital audio.
It’s not hard for audio engineers to focus on the precise—getting the right bits in the right place, but it’s rare when everything else is taken into account so it can be accurate, like timing, or wave shape, or noise.
Getting things accurate is far harder than precise. We are reminded of this fact every time we listen to reproduced music—the elements we have captured are perfect down to the smallest detail, yet it still doesn’t sound live. Precise, but not accurate to the event.
It’s intoxicating to believe when we get a few things right that the whole will somehow transcend the pieces, mimicking their precision.
But it’s a shortsighted view.

iNews Cayman honours all MOTHERS with Joan’s Poem to her ….
MOTHER (better known as Blanche)
‘Mama’ as we called her was so quiet and sweet
To hug and kiss her was really a treat.
She was fat like mothers of her day you see
Having nine healthy children she was pleased as could be.
She never wandered far from home – no way,
She kept watch for our return each and every day
Anxious that we’d each eat the food she’d prepared
With enough left for the less fortunate we always shared.
Mama loved her garden and we could always find her there
Planting, transplanting and weeding we knew she cared.
At evening time you could smell the perfume and powder
With a hat on her head no one could be prouder,
Especially if we were going to church where we’d be together.
I mean she was like a mother hen so proud to be gathered.
With no telephones her voice came across the bush
Shouting – especially for me, I really had to rush.
You see those days we visited each other to play or sing
All our homes had porches and each had a swing
Alas, when I was at the age of eight years
Mama’s happiness turned to tears
W.W.11 was raging and the enemy was all around
Suddenly mama was even more quiet and hardly made a sound,
Her oldest son, our brother was at sea and very much involved.
Mama kept listening for news – for the conflict to be resolved
Tears poured from mama’s eyes as she kept looking to the west,
Sitting in her swing she silently prayed and thought it best
“Oh God,” she said, “My precious son is at sea,
Please keep him safe and return him to me.”
And this is what mothers have to face today
The uncertainty in one’s heart to lose a son at war or play.
In our beautiful society illegal drugs play a big part
Do your thing report, your suspicions before they start
I know Sunday is Mother’s Day and I wish you all a happy one
Share your love with each other until the day is done.

About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.
NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.
NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.
