Cayman Prep A retain primary school cricket title

Cayman Prep A retained their cricket title in the 2022 Inter-Primary Cricket Competition following an extremely competitive and entertaining final with St. Ignatius Catholic School this past Friday, June 24 at the Annex Field.

The game had everything a cricket final should have… disciplined bowling, inspired batting and great fielding. St. Ignatius Catholic were at the crease first and scored a reasonable 62 runs with a number of sixes and fours belted past the outfielders.

Confident of overcoming the defending champions and taking home the title, St. Ignatius Catholic took to the field and were rewarded with a few key outs but not before Cayman Prep’s top and middle of the order batsmen had established a good run rate belting their share of sixes and fours. As the overs wore on, Cayman Prep’s batters grew in confidence as the target of 62 neared and in the second-to-last over, the Prep youngsters secured the required 63 runs to win the coveted title.

Cayman Prep A’s journey to the title game began the day before as they defeated East End Primary 110 runs to 78 runs in the first semi final. In the second semi final, St. Ignatius Catholic overcame George Town Primary 48 runs to 47 runs to secure their place in the final.

In the third-place game played simultaneously with the final, East End Primary faced George Town Primary and much like the championship game, it also had its memorable moments.

East End Primary’s resilience in the crease sparked a huge total of 101 runs in the allotted 12 overs thanks in part to some inspired batting urged on by the vocal support and instructions from the lively coaches and supporters on the sidelines.

Not to be outdone, George Town Primary kept the run rate close in the early stages as they faced East End Primary’s contingent of bowlers but it was not to be as the day’s heat coupled with some fine bowling and

fielding took its toll on the young George Towners, who could only muster a respectable but not enough 73 runs to finish fourth in the competition.

Following both games, trophies and medals were presented to the four schools by CUC’s President & CEO Richard Hew and President of the Cayman Cricket Association Courtney Myles.

A fantastic end to the 2022 cricket season with two excellent games.
