12 Jul 2023 – In the framework of the tenth edition of the Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme, The Olympic Studies Centre (OSC) has selected seven research projects, underlining their academic quality and significance with respect to the priority fields of research identified by the IOC.

The Advanced Olympic Research Grant winners and their projects are:

1. Addressing gender-based violence against women in sport: strengthening Sports Integrity Units response to disclosures

Researchers: Kirsty FORSDIKE (PI), Natalie GALEA and Aurelie PANKOWIAK (La Trobe University, Australia)

2. Evaluating the effectiveness of the implementation of elite athlete mental health support services in the United Kingdom

Researchers: Samuel GILES (PI), Mustafa SARKAR, Laura HEALY, Ella McLOUGHLIN, Jullie JOHNSTON and Sam CUMMING (PI’s University: Nottingham Trent University, Great Britain)

3. Examining adult athletes’ experiences of interpersonal violence in sport across eight countries: A motivational perspective

Researchers: Paul APPLETON (PI), Joan DUDA, Isabel BALAGUER, Lorena GONZALEZ, Likang CHI, Stiliani CHRONI, Bente SKOGVANG, Regina BRANDAO, Julia WALSH, Pam KAPPELIDES, Jeanette LOPEZ WALLE, José RODRIGUEZ, Cora BURNETT and Heather MORRIS-EYTON (PI’s University: Manchester Metropolitan University, Great Britain)

4. International Policies and Practices for Pregnant, Postpartum, and Parenting Elite Athletes

Researchers: Tara-Leigh McHUGH (Principal investigator (PI)) and Margie DAVENPORT (University of Alberta, Canada)

5. Measuring and Increasing Athletes’ Mental Health Literacy (MHL): Cross-Cultural Validation of MHL Questionnaire and Evaluation of MHL Intervention Implementation

Researchers: Janja TEKAVC (PI), Jolan KEGELAERS, Koen DE BRANDT and Heinrich Wilhelm GROBBELAAR (PI’s University: University of Maribor, Slovenia)

6. Sports Development Policy and Governance in China and Indonesia: A Comparative Assessment

Researchers: Hong FAN (PI), Ian HENRY, Steven POPE, Peijie CHEN, Guohua ZHENG, Fuhua HUANG, Huijie ZHANG, Shushu CHEN and Xiaoqian HU (PI’s University: The Institute of Olympic Studies and Research of Shanghai University of Sport, China)

7. To explore uniform differences for women and men athletes, in consultation with International Federations, and benchmark the types of uniforms that help athletes feel comfortable to perform at the Summer Olympic Games

Researchers: Clare HANLON (PI), Selina KHOO and Christopher MESAGNO (Victoria University, Australia)

Background of the programme and selection process

The main objective of the Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme is to promote advanced humanities or social sciences research by experienced researchers in priority fields of research identified annually by the IOC. University professors, lecturers and research fellows who have completed their doctorate and who currently hold an academic/research appointment covering the period of the grant are eligible to apply.
