Cayman Islands Registrar to unveil CBP at Small Business Expo
Business owners in the Cayman Islands will get their first glimpse of a new online tool for submitting company information to the Registrar of Companies.
The Registrar will unveil the Cayman Business Portal (CBP) at the Small Business Expo on Saturday, 21 October, at the University College of the Cayman Islands multipurpose hall. The expo, which runs from 9am to 4pm, is being held by the Cayman Islands Small Business Association (CISBA) in association with the Ministry of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure.
Business owners must bring valid government-issued photo identification and the name of their company, as it appears on their certificate of incorporation, to register for the portal at the expo.

Moonlight & Movies will continue on Sunday and Monday nights, and don’t miss Tuesday night when Halloween on the Big Screen offers Moonlight & Movies and something more! Royal Caribbean cancels all calls in Turkey in 2018

Royal Caribbean announced is canceling all stops to Turkey for the 2018 season in Europe, reports the Royal Caribbean Blog. According to this popular website, the company made the decision, “due to the current unpredictability of Turkey, and taking our guests’ and crew members’ safety and wellbeing into account.” Royal Caribbean has decided to call off the only port-of-call in Turkey, Ephesus (Kusadasi) and replace it with the neighboring Greek ports.
Royal Caribbean cruise ship Jewel of the Seas, was scheduled to make eight calls in Ephesus (Kusadasi) from June to October 2018. Instead, the vessel will now call on Rhodes, Greece.
Vision of the Seas with seven scheduled calls to Ephesus (Kusadasi) from May to October, will also divert its course to Rhodes or Mykonos, Greece.
Azamara Club Cruises, which is one of the Royal Caribbean International brands, has two calls in Ephesus in 2018i, however, until now they are still on schedule. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises and other cruise lines have canceled all stops in Turkey in 2017 due to safety reasons.

Major Lazer host benefit concert for hurricane-stricken Caribbean people

In wake of the wave of hurricanes that have struck the Caribbean islands, dance music supergroup Major Lazer decided to throw a benefit concert in Miami to raise funds for those affected by the natural disasters.
On Oct. 16, the Caribbean-influenced trio composed of Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire hosted a massive concert called Relief is the Mission at Mana Wynwood featuring appearances by Tory Lanez, Machel Montano, Bad Bunny and more. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the three-hour concert went to the people of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands that were affected by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. The performance raised $2,501 from 111 people on the Facebook livestream alone.

Stealing a million dollars worth of any food seems like a difficult task in itself.
Yet somehow, an employee by the name of Gilberto Escamilla, who works for the Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department in Texas, was alleged to have stolen $1.2 million of fajitas over a nine year period, as reported by the Brownsville Herald.
“If it wasn’t so serious, you’d think it was a Saturday Night Live skit. But this is the real thing,” District Attorney Luis V. Saenz told the newspaper.
The alleged plot was only uncovered when Escamilla took a day off for a doctor’s appointment on Aug. 7. Someone didn’t hit pause on their operation, because a Labatt Food Service truck turned up to the department’s kitchen. The driver informed another employee of an 800 pound delivery of fajitas.
When the driver was told the kitchen didn’t serve fajitas, he replied that he had been delivering them for the last nine years. Oops.
“When Mr. Escamilla reports to work the next day, he is confronted with the discussion and he admits he had been stealing fajitas for nine years,” Saenz said.
Escamilla was (obviously) quickly fired, and his house was searched by investigators where they found his fridge filled with fajitas. It turns out he would deliver them to waiting customers on the day he would receive them.
Following the investigation, Escamilla was arrested last Tuesday on a first-degree theft felony.
The fajita felony has prompted a review of department policy, but still leaves us wondering who’d eat that much Mexican food.

27-year-old woman shot in the Las Vegas massacre woke up from her coma

Tina Frost, a 27-year-old certified public accountant who was shot in the head when a gunman opened fire on a music festival in Las Vegas, has woken up from her coma.
Frost was attending the Route 91 Harvest festival with her boyfriend and friends earlier this month when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock fired on concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino,killing 58 people and injuring over 500 more.
Frost’s mother, Mary Watson Moreland, posted on a GoFundMe page set up by a family friend that Frost’s vitals are stable but that doctors had to remove her right eye, where a bullet became lodged after piercing the frontal lobes of her brain.
“She has sight in her left eye but will never see from the right again,” Moreland said.
Frost’s family and friends set up the GoFundMe in order to raise money for her medical treatment and overall recovery, as well as other expenses related to the tragedy like “traveling, food, hotels, missed work, and caring for Tina,” the page says.
They set a fundraising goal of $50,000 and have raised almost $550,000 so far — more than 10 times the original amount.
The campaign is currently trending and has been shared over 48,000 times on social media since it launched on October 2.
Frost’s mother said Friday, the day Frost woke up, was a big day for her daughter. Frost is now able to open her left eye and “taps her feet whenever music is playing, continues to squeeze our hands, and even gives [boyfriend] Austin a thumbs up when asked,” Moreland said, according to the GoFundMe page.
She added that her daughter was able to breathe on her own for six hours that day, and that Frost was also paid a special visit by The Jabbawockeez, who won the first season of “America’s Best Dance Crew” in 2008.
Frost works at Ernst & Young in San Diego, California, and her mother said that the company sent her a RARE Science teddy bear “that she hugs and pats on the back to show us she likes him :).”
As her condition continues to improve, Frost will be “moving ICU to ICU, so the whole team will be on track with her recovery” her mother said. It’s unclear how much more short-term and long-term treatment Frost will require, Moreland continued, before thanking everyone who had followed the story for their thoughts and prayers.
Frost’s high school friends, Tara Beavers and Ali Shomper, also held a separate fundraiser for her in Maryland on Saturday, ABC News reported, which drew dozens of attendees.
“We just love her. She’s a great person. We want to her help her out any way we can. We can’t wait for her to get better,” Beavers told local ABC affiliate WJLA.
“Were happy with the turn out tonight,” Shomper added on Saturday. “Every little bit counts. You know the bills are going to [be] high. This is a great for us to pitch in.”

Somalia: At least 230 dead in Mogadishu blast

A massive bomb attack in a busy area of the Somali capital Mogadishu on Saturday is now known to have killed at least 230 people, police say.
Hundreds more were wounded when a lorry packed with explosives detonated near the entrance of a hotel.
It is the deadliest terror attack in Somalia since the Islamist al-Shabab group launched its insurgency in 2007.
It is not clear who staged the bombing, but Mogadishu is a target for al-Shabab militants battling the government.
President Mohamed Abdullahi “Farmajo” Mohamed has declared three days of mourning for the victims of the blast.
Local media reported families gathering in the area on Sunday morning, looking for missing loved ones amid the ruins of one of the largest bombs ever to strike the city.
Police official Ibrahim Mohamed told AFP news agency the death toll is likely to rise. “There are more than 300 wounded, some of them seriously,” he said.
Officials also confirmed that two people were killed in a second bomb attack in the Madina district of the city.
A BBC Somali reporter at the scene of the main blast said the Safari Hotel had collapsed, with people trapped under the rubble.
An eyewitness, local resident Muhidin Ali, told news agency AFP it was “the biggest blast I have ever witnessed, it destroyed the whole area”.
Meanwhile, the director of the Madina Hospital, Mohamed Yusuf Hassan, said he was shocked by the scale of the attack.
“Seventy-two wounded people were admitted to the hospital and 25 of them are in very serious condition. Others lost their hands and legs at the scene.
“What happened yesterday was incredible, I have never seen such a thing before, and countless people lost their lives. Corpses were burned beyond recognition.”
The international community has been quick to condemn the attack.
In a statement, the US Mission to Somalia said: “Such cowardly attacks reinvigorate the commitment of the United States to assist our Somali and African Union partners to combat the scourge of terrorism.”
UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said: “My thoughts are with families of the victims, and the government and people of Somalia at this difficult time.
“Those responsible have shown no regard for human life or the suffering of the Somali people. The UK will continue to support Somalia in the fight against terrorism.”

Cayman Islands: Suspected Barracuda Bite
The Department of Environment (DoE) is aware of an incident in the water off Seven Mile Beach by The Westin hotel this morning (Friday, 13 October 2017) in which a man received a suspected barracuda bite.
Following investigations, officers from DoE believe the man encountered a barracuda that was feeding in a school of fish in the area.
This is a very unusual incident and no cause for alarm for people swimming or enjoying other water activities in the vicinity.

Cayman Islands Customs Registration of Importers Begins Monday (16)
To help importers start using a system for entry declaration, the Customs Department will start registering importers. The registration takes place from Monday, 16 October 2017 until 27 October 2017, from 8:30am to 4:00pm, Monday to Friday, on the 1st floor of Customs Headquarters, located at #42 Owens Roberts Drive (locally known as Airport Road).
Only after registration and formal recognition by Customs as an importer can they access the new online electronic system for entry declaration that comes into effect on 1 November 2017. Importers have to complete and submit entries electronically to Customs using the new gateway portal COLS (Customs Online System), which they will be able to access through the website www.customs.gov.ky.
To be registered, each individual has to visit Customs headquarters in person and provide relevant information including a government-issued identification, e.g., driver’s licence or passport.
Additionally, companies and businesses will have to provide their business licence and/or company registration, including directorship.

Cayman Islands: Reminder to Mobile Liquor Licence Holders
Holders of retail mobile liquor licences are reminded of their obligation under the Liquor Licensing Law (2016 Revision) and Music And Dancing (Control) Law (2012 Revision), to avoid any potential breaches of these laws.
The Chairman of the Liquor Licensing Board reminds all mobile licensees to comply with the laws and that the licence is restricted to mobile bartending and limited to private and organised events or functions. No street-side vending is allowed. The licence holders must also comply with permitted hours and any other conditions listed on the licence to avoid actions by the Board. Failure to comply could result in recommendations by the Board to revoke such licences.
Licence holders are also reminded of their responsibility to notify the Chairman through the Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) at least seven days in advance of events hosting 49 or more persons and give at least 24 hours’ notice during business hours for events hosting 49 or less persons. Notification can be sent via email to [email protected] and should include all relevant details of the event.
Licensees are further advised that under the Music and Dancing (Control) Law (2012 Revision), Section 9 subsection (2), the Chairman may, from time to time, grant extensions of permitted hours in respect of special occasions either generally or in the case of a particular licence. Request for extensions will be processed through the Secretariat.

Cayman Islands Pirates Week food handlers training 2017
The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) advises the public that it will be conducting two basic Food Handlers’ Certification Courses for Pirates Week food vendors on Wednesday, 25 October and Thursday, 26 October 2017. Each course will commence at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Sessions will be held at the DEH Conference Room which is located at the Cayman Islands Environmental Centre, 580 North Sound Road, Grand Cayman.
The DEH urges all food handlers needing to update their certification before Pirates Week to register early for one of these courses as there is limited space available. The cost of registration for each course is $15 per person and includes the cost of materials.
At the end of the course, food handlers will be certified in safe food handling and be able to prevent the spread of food-borne illness and disease. Certification is valid for three years.

Hurricane Irma Appeal launched by Cayman Islands Red Cross
The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) is launching its Hurricane Irma appeal in light of the devastation suffered by the Eastern Caribbean islands as the storm continues to wreak havoc throughout the region.
“We really don’t know the extent of the damage as full assessments haven’t been conducted yet, but based on what we have seen and heard Irma has been catastrophic for several nations,” explains CIRC Director Jondo Obi. “The Anguilla Red Cross has lost its headquarters, and as has now been widely reported the island of Barbuda has basically been declared uninhabitable,” she continues.
“We are still working on establishing contact with our counterparts throughout the region, and those with whom we have reached have stated that they are physically well but emotionally devastated,” adds Mrs. Obi.
The CIRC’s Irma appeal is strictly for monetary donations, and the organisation urges residents *not* to make arrangements to send supplies to the affected areas.
“The arrival of unsolicited donations into a disaster zone is at times referred to as the second disaster,” explains Deputy Director Carolina Ferreira. “The items that most people would like to donate, like clothing, shoes, household items and toys, are not a priority in the immediate aftermath of a catastrophe, and when they arrive into affected areas they create numerous problems for workers on the ground,” she explains.
Unsolicited donations are not only difficult and costly to send, but in areas where major ports have been affected and alternative locations are being utilised they become difficult for organisations to access and collect, if they are even made aware of their existence at all. Furthermore clearing and collecting such goods means diverting personnel and equipment away from more pressing tasks, like damage assessments. There is also the issue of sorting and storage, as such widespread devastation means that many buildings have been affected and there is a shortage of space. Lastly, often times the affected population is not in a position to be able to receive these goods at the time when they are sent.
“The Cayman Islands Red Cross is a branch of the British Red Cross, and the funds we collect here go directly to the most affected areas as part of the larger appeal by the British Red Cross and the International Federation,” adds Keith Ford, Disaster Manager for the organisation. “The people of these Eastern Caribbean islands are already going to need a lot of help, but the truth is that Jose is following closely behind a similar path and set to turn into a major hurricane itself. We must help.”

Cayman Islands’ Green Iguana Cull extended
The Department of Environment wishes to announce that this year’s green iguana cull is to be extended until the end of November 2017.
Although contracts to cullers were issued with a provisional end date of 31 August 2017, availability of funds is sufficient to allow current culling contractors to continue until the end of November. Terms of contracts and payment rates will remain unchanged.
Culling contractors and other interested parties are asked to carefully note the following deadlines and arrangements:
1. No new contractors will be signed up after 5 p.m. on 31 August, 2017.
2. The green iguana raffle will close on 31 August 2017. Participants will be invited to attend the closing draw.
3. No contractor reports of culled iguanas will be accepted for payment after 5 p.m. on 30 November, 2017.
