Pakistan complete one-day double over world T20 champions

Pakistan wrapped up their tour of the West Indies with an 11-run win in the second Twenty20 international in St Vincent on Sunday to complete a one-day double over the world T20 champions.

The visitors ran through the home team’s top order at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown to lay the foundation for success as they defended a modest target of 135 for seven by restricting the West Indies to 124 for nine from their 20 overs.

It ensured a successful conclusion to Pakistan’s tour on the back of a 3-1 win in the five-match ODI series played in Guyana and St Lucia.

1ST T20: BABAR CLINCHES LAST-BALL THRILLER

Opener Ahmed Shehzad scored a breezy 44 in 53 balls but was not supported by his partners. His departure for the fourth wicket in the 13th over brought Umar Akmal to the crease and he took over the scoring responsibility on a slow track.

While spinner Sunil Narine threatened to sweep through the rest of the Pakistan batting, taking three wickets in a second spell at the end of the innings, Akmal helped push the tally to 135 with an unbeaten 46 off 56 balls.

In reply, West Indies lost their first three wickets in three overs, including another failure for Chris Gayle, who lobbed a ball straight to cover and was out for one.

Dwayne Bravo, Narine and Kieron Pollard threatened a dramatic rescue, even though the asking run rate went to more than 12 an over.

During a dramatic 17th over, Pollard smashed 20 runs off the first four balls with two sixes landing on the roof of the stand.

Zulfiqar Babar then had him caught in the deep and took a second wicket with the next ball, dismissing Bravo in similar fashion. Tino Best, the last man in, threatened some drama too with two huge sixes but fell short in the end.

WEST INDIES INNINGS

Pakistan bowlers came up with a disciplined performance to defeat West Indies by 11 runs in the second Twenty20 International to clean sweep the series.

Chasing 136 to win, West Indies were in trouble early on when they lost four wickets for just 17 runs.

Dwayne Bravo (35) and Sunil Narine (28) revived the hopes sharing a 47-run for the fifth-wicket but the required run rate seemed to be cropping up.

Kieron Pollard suddenly sprang life into the match smashing the first four balls of Zulfiqar Babar’s fourth over for 20 runs. But he succumbed the very next ball.

Tino Best also provided a glimpse of hope firing two sixes during his unbeaten 17 but his efforts could only take West Indies to 124 for nine in 20 overs.

Umar Akmal struck an unbeaten 46 after Ahmed Shehzad had set the foundation scoring a gritty 44 as Pakistan posted a competitive 135 for seven in 20 overs.

But it was Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine who stole the show with some impressive bowling performances.

While Badree took two wickets in the top order, Narine claimed three including the wicket of Shahid Afridi as West Indies ensured they kept a check on Pakistan’s score.

PAKISTAN INNINGS

An unbeaten 46 from Umar Akmal boosted a flagging Pakistan as they eventually reached 135 for seven against the West Indies in the second and final Twenty20 international at the Arnos Vale Stadium on Sunday

The wicketkeeper-batsman’s late assault in lifting the tourists from 109 for seven in the 18th over could prove crucial.

Despite 44 from opening batsman Ahmed Shehzad, it appeared as if Hafeez would have been made to regret the decision to bat first on winning the toss.

He fell cheaply to Samuel Badree and with wickets continuing to tumble at regular intervals, West Indies appeared to have their opponents in a real stranglehold as they struggled to get the ball on a blistering afternoon.

Badree’s effort of two for 20 was a vast improvement from the previous day but it was his Trinidad and Tobago compatriot and fellow spinner Sunil Narine who finished with the best figures of three for 26.
