$300 million robbery hits L. Seepersaud Maraj
While details are sketchy, the Guyana Guardian understands that bandits apparently prised open several locks and the grill system of the stand occupied by the jeweller at Stabroek Market, and then used two or more blow torches to penetrate a large safe which is said to have contained between $250 million to $300 million dollars in gold and diamonds.
The businessman made the discovery when he went to open a network of stalls which serves as the outlet for the jewelry business.
It remains unclear as to whether there were any security cameras in or around the premises, or if any of the city police that guards the Stabroek Market had seen anything amiss.
At least one investigator told this publication that the bandits cleaned the entire safe which is about 6 foot tall, and did not leave even penny in it.
The gold stash is said to have been insured to the tune of several hundred millions of dollars.
Up to press time, several detectives were still at the location, as the police embarked on a broad investigation in a bid to identify and capture the perpetrators.
