Those planning a Caribbean cruise vacation that will take place specifically between the months of June and November have an additional factor to consider: hurricanes.

During this time, much of the Caribbean, especially the Bahamas along with Bermuda have the potential to be in the crosshairs of these storms.

But there are several alternatives.

The Southern Caribbean and coastal islands of South America are located outside of the “hurricane belt” and therefore considered less likely to be affected by the storms — although Mother Nature is unpredictable. Cruises have the added advantage of being able to change course should a problem arise. Here are seven tropical cruise ideas for those planning a summer or fall cruise.

South America’s East Coast

Embarking from Bridgetown, Barbados, Voyages of Discovery has an exotic itinerary scheduled for the end of November to less-visited parts of South America and the Caribbean.

First, the 540-passenger MV Voyager stops at the postcard-perfect beaches of Scarborough, on the island of Tobago before sailing to the Paramaribo, Suriname for a maiden call, followed by Îles du Salut, an island off the coast of French Guiana.

Next, it’s another maiden call in Georgetown, Guyana, where passengers can book a scenic flight to Kaieteur Falls. The ship then heads to Trinidad, the birthplace of calypso before visiting Margarita Island, Venezuela, often called the “Pearl of the Caribbean.”

The final port of call is the spice island of Grenada.

Luxury Southern Caribbean Cruise

The luxury cruise line Silversea, has a seven-night cruise sailing from Barbados Nov. 5 that will call on islands in the Southern Caribbean. Enjoy butler service on the Silver Whisper en route to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) before returning to Barbados.

The ABC Islands with Princess

Princess Cruises sails from Fort Lauderdale and spends two days at sea as it heads directly to the ABC Islands. This cruise also offers passengers what many cruise lines fall shy of: more time in port. Between 10 and 14 hours are spent at each island. The Caribbean Princess embarks Nov. 5, 2016 — allowing plenty of time to plan.

Windward Islands On a Tall Sailing Ship

Island Windjammers has several summer cruises from Grenada on a tall sailing ship — at discounted rates to boot. These six-night, carefree cruises sail throughout the Grenadines to islands that many larger cruise ships do not visit, including Tobago Cays, Bequia, and Mayreau.

Colombia and the ABC Islands on a Spanish Cruise Line

Pullmantur Cruises, the Spain-based cruise line operated by Royal Caribbean, is sailing a seven-night voyage round-trip from Colon, Panama. The 2,752-passenger Monarch calls in Cartagena and the ABC Islands with sailing dates ranging from September through December.

Small-Ship Cruising to Venezuela, Trinidad, and Tobago

The new small ship company, Haimark Line, is exploring the Orinoco Delta this November on a 12-night cruise beginning in Trinidad. Excursions include local villages, and visits to some lesser-frequented ports like Santa Marta, Colombia; Man-O-War Bay, Tobago; and Isla Blanquilla, Venezuela — an uninhabited island. The cruise also plies the Caribbean Sea with stops in Bonaire, Curacao, and Isla Margarita.

Sail from Florida on Carnival

Carnival has an affordable eight-night cruise on the recently remodeled, Carnival Sunshine, that sails from Port Canaveral (Florida). The ship visits Aruba and Curacao, and will stop in Grand Turk on the return voyage. Sailing dates range from July through October.
