Cayman Brac plane crash

At least two people have died in a plane crash on the bluff in Cayman Brac.

The Cessna 127 – which is registered in Mexico – got into difficulties late Sunday night.

Emergency services had to chop through the bush, which is east of the island’s football pitch, to get to the wreckage.

Police confirmed this morning remains of people on board were found at the scene.

On Monday morning investigators were searching through the wreckage.

The single engine plane approached from the west, flying over the bluff and it circled for a while before crashing.  The aircraft crashed in the bush off the side of a long strip of road where residents used to hold quarter mile races.

The plane clipped a light pole.  Debris, including the wing section of the plane, is in the road.  Roads that lead to the crash site are currently closed to the public including Bluff Road opposite of Charlotte’s Road.

A police spokesman said: “On Sunday, November 13th 2011 the RCIPS received a report that a single light aircraft crashed on Cayman Brac in the area of the Bluff .

“Police, Fire and Ambulance teams responded to the crash scene where the wreckage of a light aircraft was located.  Remains believed to be of persons connected to the aircraft were located at or near the crash scene.

“The RCIPS has dispatched its air support unit along with a senior investigating officer and has made contact with the Civil Aviation Authourity (CAA).”
