MIAMI, FL (Tuesday, April 15, 2014) – The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced today that its Disciplinary Committee has levied fines on Mexican club Cruz Azul FC, and extended a suspension to goalkeeper Jesus Corona for his part in an altercation following the CONCACAF Champions League semifinal return match on Wednesday, April 9 at the Estadio Azul in Mexico City.

The Mexico City club was fined an undisclosed amount for the incident, which took place following the final whistle of the return leg of the semifinal clash between the two clubs, from which Cruz Azul ultimately emerged victorious by a 2-1 aggregate score line. Disciplinary action against Club Tijuana is pending.

In addition to the fine and the one-match automatic suspension for the red card, Cruz Azul’s Jesus Corona is regarded as having breached Article 47 par. (m) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Therefore and in accordance with art. 77 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and has been handed an additional two-match suspension — three games total. The additional suspension was levied as punishment for unsporting behavior, specifically in the use of provocative language and gesticulations employed with the motive of inciting an opponent.

The three-game total ban will prevent Corona from participating in the two-leg CCL Finals, as well as the first match of the FIFA Club World Cup Morocco 2014, should Cruz Azul earn the Confederation’s ticket to that event.

The CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee applied further sanctions to Doctor Alfonso Jimenez Vega of Cruz Azul. Jimenez Vega is regarded as having breached Article 50 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and thus has been handed a two match suspension.

Furthermore, Cruz Azul is regarded as having breached Article 2.3 of the CONCACAF Champions League Team Media Guidelines, specifically for players refusing to attend mandatory post-game media opportunities, and therefore has been additionally sanctioned in accordance with Article 6.2 of the CONCACAF Champions League Regulations and Articles 14, 15, and 40 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

Cruz Azul will hosted Deportivo Toluca Tuesday night at 7:00 pm local time, at the Estadio Azul, in the first leg of the home-and-away Finals of the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League
