Schindler’s PORT technology installed at San Juan’s Union Plaza is the first in Caribbean
First building in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to benefit from this innovative destination-dispatch elevator system
Transforms the way occupants navigate and move around the building
Modernization of building has kept tenants and customer happy
Increases efficiency and energy savings
MORRISTOWN, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Schindler Elevator Corporation recently completed the modernization and installation of its PORT (Personal Occupant Requirement Terminal) elevator technology at the Union Plaza office building located at 416 Avenida Juan Ponce de León in San Juan, Puerto Rico. An 18-story office building, it is the first building in the Caribbean to benefit from Schindler’s award-winning destination-dispatch elevator technology.
“Energy costs in Puerto Rico are currently twice as high as on the mainland and Schindler’s PORT Technology at Union Plaza has contributed to reducing the building’s overall energy consumption”
Originally built as a single tenant office building, the 1960s-style building was struggling to remain competitive in San Juan’s commercial building marketplace. With more tenants than the building was originally designed to support, building owners Union Holdings, Inc., chose Schindler’s PORT Technology to modernize its elevator equipment to help move hundreds of tenants every day faster and more efficiently. Schindler completed the installation of its PORT destination-dispatch system on four high-rise passenger elevators at Union Plaza. The PORT modernization has dramatically increased tenant satisfaction and retention and has improved the building’s elevator performance and efficiency.
Best understood as the central nervous system of a building, the PORT Technology functions as a two-way communication interface between the occupants and the building’s environment. The system’s most visible aspect is the user interface which is a sleek, touch screen positioned at access points and elevators throughout the building. Behind the stylish PORT terminal is a powerful patented access control software system, capable of calculating the optimum route to any destination within the building. With this information, PORT Technology primes the elevators to direct and transport people quickly and safely to their individual destinations.
“PORT Technology truly modernized Union Plaza by providing a more efficient use of equipment and superior traffic management,” says Chris Smith, director, Marketing & Communications for Schindler. “What makes the system special is the ease and efficiency in which tenants move through the building.”
“Energy costs in Puerto Rico are currently twice as high as on the mainland and Schindler’s PORT Technology at Union Plaza has contributed to reducing the building’s overall energy consumption,” says Manuel Sanchez Biscombe, EVP & COO, Union Holdings, Inc. “The PORT Technology elevator modernization has helped us cut energy costs and meet our sustainability goals.”
PORT Technology Energy-Saving Features
Each PORT terminal’s proximity sensor tells it when to be active and at all other times puts it into low energy consumption mode.
When the terminal screen illuminates, an ambient light sensor determines only the brightness level required, again optimizing energy usage.
The PORT Technology helps ensure elevator trips are as efficient as possible. This produces a very resourceful use of energy even during heavy traffic.
