Shining a Light on Older Persons
Over 200 seniors gathered today (Wednesday 1 October 2014) at the Family Life Centre, to mark the start of the Cayman Islands’ month-long celebration of older persons.
Organized by the Department of the Children and Family Services (DCFS), this year’s Older Persons Month theme is: Helping Older Persons Excel (HOPE).
The luncheon event featured a lively afternoon filled with praise and worship. In addition there were musical performances by students from George Town Primary School, Savannah Primary and John A Cumber Primary including a local act by Aunt Sookie.
Well-known senior, Mrs. Olive Miller, also wrote and performed a song specifically for Older Persons’ Month.
Cayman National Bank sponsored the lunch, while members of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman helped to serve the guests. Various persons from the community were also among volunteers.
Describing the importance of older persons within society, Premier and Minister of Home and Community Affairs, Hon. Alden McLaughlin, said during the luncheon, “This month is set aside to celebrate the Day of Older Persons and to spend with the seniors among us in our communities. I try as much as I can to listen to them and absorb their wisdom of age.”
A key focus of the annual observance is to ensure that adequate opportunities are in place to keep seniors vibrant and respected within the community.
Her Excellency, the Governor Helen Kilpatrick also addressed the crowd.
Other events planned this month include a church service, an island tour as well as more social gatherings across the Cayman Islands.
