Ms. Arena McField has taken home the Ministry of Planning, Lands Housing and Infrastructure’s (PLAHI) top award for outstanding public service.
A Recreation, Parks and Cemeteries Unit (RPCU) supervisor, Ms. McField was chosen from more than 450 staff members for the annual recognition award, which was announced last week.
Highlighting the “crucial role she plays in maintaining the interests of the Cayman Islands – for the benefit of residents and tourists alike”, PLAHI Minister Kurt Tibbetts said, “Arena’s dedication to RPCU reflects well on the Ministry and on Government as a whole. We are extremely thankful for her dedication and high standards.”
Arena and her team of workers are responsible for managing and maintaining beaches, town halls, cemeteries and other public facilities in the eastern districts.
“Arena is a perfectionist in all she does, and her attention to detail is known to all who work with her,” said RPCU Manager Mark Bothwell. “In addition to outstanding performance, she regularly gives her time on weekends and after-hours, for no additional pay.
Her prize package included an award and a round trip ticket to any Cayman Airways destination within the region.
Ministry officials report that, in the process of senior management choosing the annual winner, they found overall standards so high that consolation prizes (plaques and cash awards) were given to three other deserving workers, and presented by Minister Tibbetts and Chief Officer Alan Jones.

One honourary mention award went to Land Registry Assistant Jackie Carter. Lands and Survey Director Rupert Vasquez noted her “exemplary” work ethic and willingness to embrace change. “In recent times, she has worked hard, alongside the Registrar of Lands, to modernise and update the Land Registry system. Mrs. Carter always maintains a positive attitude, and never hesitates to undertake whatever assignment is presented.”
Mrs. Carter’s professionalism, dedication and teamwork, along with her readiness to exceed expectations were warmly praised by her Head of Department.
“This is a pat on the back for all your colleagues, and a reflection of your department and its good reputation,” said Mr. Jones.
Another awardee in the “extremely close selection process” was Government Administration Building Manager Adam McLaren. Presenting the award, Acting Facilities Manager Troy Whorms said that Mr McLaren was humble, always available, and the first person to step up to challenges – even when overwhelmed with work.”
Mr Whorms added that Mr McLaren always had the best-interest of Government at heart, especially in relation to maximising cost-efficiencies.
Good performance is all in a day’s work for Isabella Hubbell-Butler, who “typifies what you want in a good employee” – according to Minister Kurt Tibbetts. She was selected as the Core Ministry Employee of the Year for 2014.
The Administrative Secretary/Personal Assistant to the Chief Officer, Mrs. Hubbell-Butler is described as a “go-to person, who is willing to go the extra mile”, and was recognised for her outstanding performance and commitment to excellence.
The Chief Officer described her as humble, a hard worker and well-liked among her peers. “Isabella is committed to excellence, and works tirelessly to meet deadlines – often sacrificing her personal time in the process,” Mr. Jones noted.
Staff in each of the four sections from which the awardees were chosen were also treated to an informal gathering and refreshments, in celebration of their team member.
