Caymanian orthopaedic doctor joins HSA

_Eirik HeslaDr Eirik Randolph Hesla recently joined the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) as a physician and orthopaedic surgeon, following in the historic footsteps of his mother, Dr Margeret ‘Molly’ Brown, the first female Caymanian with a higher education.

Dr Hesla, previously worked at the Umea University Hospital in Sweden and the Akershus University Hospital in Oslo, Norway, specialising in orthopaedics.

Specialising in trauma and fracture treatment and a variety of elective surgeries, Dr Hesla said he was looking forward to putting his skills and experience into practice in the Cayman Islands.

“My mother is from the Cayman Islands and so I feel a particular bond with the community here,” he said. “My parents, brother and two sisters are all doctors, so having a career in the medical field seems to be a family tradition. As a doctor, it’s always a privilege to help those in need. I’m really looking forward to working with all my new colleagues at the HSA and the various opportunities that lie ahead.”

“My mother was a primary paediatrician with a double specialty in Psychiatry. My father, who is still practicing, is a neurologist specialising in sleeping disorders,” Dr Hesla said.

Ms Lizzette Yearwood, Chief Executive Officer of the Health Services Authority, said she is delighted to announce Dr Hesla’s appointment.

“We are fortunate to have an orthopaedic surgeon and physician Dr Hesla’s ability working with us at the Cayman Islands Hospital,” she said. “The fact that he comes with an impeccable pedigree following his mother’s place in our history books as the first female Caymanian doctor, makes his appointment all the more rewarding for us. We are very pleased to have Dr Hesla on staff and look forward to his addition contribution as we continue to provide the best care to our patients here at the HSA.”

Dr Hesla completed an Officer Course with the Norwegian Cavalry and played football to a semi-professional level in Sweden. He comes to Cayman with his wife and their three young boys.
