The Cayman Islands National Gallery presents a new season of Cine Club

Ma Vie en Rose Film StillComing-of-age Curated by NGCI Deutsche Bank Intern Lyle Anderton

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is pleased to present a new season of Cine Club curated by this year’s NGCI Deutsche Bank Intern, Mr Lyle Anderton. The new season will explore modern coming-of-age stories, a genre that focuses on the growth of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Coming-of-age stories tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue over action and are often set in the past. Each of the films selected cover stories that are thousands of miles apart geographically speaking but share common struggles and portray the changes that their characters confront as they approach adulthood and further levels of mental maturity.

My Brother Is an Only Child Film StillMr Kerwin Ebanks, the National Gallery’s Education Coordinator, comments, “This is an excellent choice for Lyle, as a young professional he himself is certainly able to relate to the characters and themes in the films selected. It is important that we experience new things and view the world from different perspectives.” Mr Anderton adds, “I think it is key that we continue to show films that are international or independently produced, as these films tend to show the more artistic side of film-making, giving audiences a chance to stray away from the generic Hollywood block busters that may become quite repetitive over time.”

Lyle is a fourth year visual and creative arts student at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario (Canada). He is currently on a year off from school to gain practical work experience by completing the NGCI Deutsche Bank Internship programme at the National Gallery. Lyle is an avid painter and tends to work in large scale mediums. He also holds interest in woodworking and tattooing as well as film. He will be returning to Canada in the fall of 2015 to complete his final year in Sheridan’s VCA program. “Now that Lyle is coming to the end of his yearlong internship and has gained wide variety of skills and experiences it is important that he is able to take on larger projects, such as curating the season of Cine Club.” Notes Mr Ebanks.

Mr Anderton explains, “I’m really looking forward to the launch of the new Cine Club season. I plan to begin each session with an overview of the film and after the film has been screened I will lead a discussion about the themes and find out what viewers thought. It will also be interesting to draw themes between the various films. I think the coming-of-age theme will be a popular one to explore as anyone in the audiences will be able to relate.”

Screenings will be held at the National Gallery in the Dart Auditorium every second and fourth Monday at 7:00 PM beginning 27 April 2015. Tickets are $10 and $8 for NGCI members and season passes can be purchased for $50 and $40 for NGCI members. A glass or wine or a soft drink will be included at each Cine Club meeting.
