The Chamber of Commerce (COC) 18th Annual Earth Day Clean-Up took place on Saturday April 18. Although the official start was 7 a.m. hundreds of people were out from sunrise as they committed to their goal of cleaning-up Cayman’s roadsides and beaches. Approximately 1,500 people came out representing schools, businesses, church groups, and other community organisations. After the clean-up everyone was invited to a FREE brunch at Tiki Beach courtesy of LIME.

Showing incredible community spirit, volunteers were provided with Earth Day T-shirts sponsored by Deutsche Bank, Caps sponsored by BritCay, water bottles sponsored by Davenport Development and reusable tote bags sponsored by Dart, Davenport Development, Hew’s Cleaning Services, RBC Royal Bank and Walkers. JUNK Ltd. provided clear bags for recyclable items and the Department of Environmental Health supplied garbage bags and gloves.

“It was a spectacular day,” said Wil Pineau CCE, Chamber CEO. “The community spirit generated by this clean-up event is always extraordinary. The full-spectrum of our population is represented with the common goal of improving our environment and making it a safer and cleaner place to live. Sometimes we forget that it is the beauty of the Cayman Islands that is our greatest asset. If we don’t preserve this and take a pride in where we live then we run the risk of losing valuable tourism dollars and investment.”

Speaking on local television station CITN/Cayman27 Chamber’s CEO, Wil Pineau, said project helpers uncovered areas where people are throwing litter on vacant properties in George Town.

The filled bags were placed alongside the roadside to be collected by Department of Environmental Health (DEH)
