Digicel SportsMax announced last week that it has secured the broadcast rights to what is being billed as the “Fight of the Century” between undefeated, five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao, scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 2.

Digicel SportsMax will also showcase the fight on big screens across the Caribbean.

Mayweather, the world’s wealthiest athlete with a net worth of some US$280 million, enters the ring undefeated with a record 47 wins including 26 knock-outs. Mayweather has won six boxing championships in five different weight classes: Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Junior Welterweight, Welterweight twice and Super Welterweight. If he manages to retire unbeaten, Mayweather will join just 12 other fighters who have ended their careers without a loss.

Manny Pacquiao, once considered the pound-for-pound No 1 boxer in the world, is the only boxer to win titles in an unprecedented eight different weight classes: Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight. The Filipino is bidding to become the first man to defeat Mayweather and goes into the ring with a record of 57 wins, five losses and two draws.

SportsMax Caribbean marketing manager, Tanya Lee expressed delight at broadcasting the fight to the Caribbean’s boxing fans.

“Digicel SportsMax could not miss out on the opportunity to show the biggest boxing match-up in recent history to a Caribbean audience. This is a great treat for our subscribers and fans of the sport as it’s only available on Pay Per View in the US market. We look forward to hosting boxing fans ‘ringside’ with our presenting sponsors, Digicel, to watch on the big screens in the region,” said Lee.

The long-anticipated showdown between Mayweather, 38, and Pacquiao, 36, was agreed in February, after more than five years of on-and-off negotiations, and is expected to be the most lucrative bout in history, with Mayweather and Pacquiao set to bank at least US$180 million and US$120 million respectively.

The May 2 match-up can be seen on Digicel SportsMax across its 25 Caribbean markets and on live stream pay per view courtesy of Digicel.

Digicel SportsMax are also regional rights holders of premium sporting content such as the Barclays Premier League, the UEFA Champions League, The NBA, The Women’s Tennis Association quarters to finals, The Indian Premier League, The Ashes, Australia and England cricket, IAAF Grand Prix Meets and more.
