Appleby gives back with charity day
Several local charities are able to offer continued services in animal care, child and family welfare and education to the Cayman community thanks to the second Appleby (Cayman) Ltd charity day event.
Successful applicants include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, Canine Friends, Cayman HospiceCare, the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, Cayman National Cultural Foundation, Hope for Today Foundation, NCVO, Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and YMCA of the Cayman Islands.
Historically, the firm has consistently shown its support to a number of charities in the Cayman Islands through direct monetary donations and corporate sponsorship, pro-bono legal advice and hands-on volunteering.
Bryan Hunter, Managing Partner of the Cayman office, said: “There are so many local charities doing commendable things in our community and it’s often difficult to decide which to support; that’s why the charity day works so well. Through the interview process the Appleby Cayman Charity Day committee learned so much more about the ins and outs of how each charity benefits the community and the struggles they face; it’s inspiring to witness their passion and perseverance and to know, by extension, we are connected to each of the lives touched through these charities.”
Through the firm’s charity day donation, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation will re-launch its arts and culture journal, Foundations, a project that has been shelved since 2005 due to lack of funding. Nasaria Budal, Business Development and Marketing Executive, Appleby, and organiser of the Appleby Cayman Charity Day noted: “Education — particularly relating to the history and culture of the Cayman Islands — is especially important to Appleby and we are delighted to reinstate the Foundations journal, which will be an essential reference tool available for use in social studies and history classes in all local primary, secondary and tertiary schools.”
The charity day programme began in 2014 and the types of charities supported were chosen through feedback received from all Appleby (Cayman) staff. This year, the Appleby Cayman Charity Day committee reviewed 25 applications, of which 21 were interviewed and, ultimately, 10 were chosen to receive financial assistance from the firm.
