At 11:23pm, Tuesday 5th May 2015, the 911 Centre received a call of a vessel in distress of the north coast of Grand Cayman, and taking on water.

The Police helicopter was immediately deployed and located, a Panga type canoe, with two person on board after a search of ten minutes; some distance from the location originally given, half a mile outside the reef line off Rum Point Drive.   The boat was not under power and seem to be dead in the water and sinking. The rear end of the vessel was completely submerged with the two occupants in the bow.

IMG-20150506-WA001The Joint Marine Unit deployed with the motor vessel Niven D,  was  guided onto scene by the helicopter crew within 15 minutes.   Two local males were removed from the sinking vessel onto the Niven D and conveyed safely back to shore.

A police spokesman said “This is an incident that could have easily been worse  in consequence for the boats occupants, as the sea conditions were rough.   Fortunately with the timely use of the  Air Operations Unit and the Marine Unit, the incident was brought to a swift and safe conclusion”.
