Cayman islands Immigration ready to accept Caregivers’ applications
The Certificate allows non-Caymanian workers hired by local families to take care of sick, disabled or elderly patients and gives them up to a 10-year exemption from term limit provisions under the Cayman Islands Immigration Law (2014 Revision).
The re-establishment of the certificate allows workers to stay up to 10 years beyond the end of their normal nine-year term limit of residence in the Islands, as long as they are still caring for the same individual.
Those who obtain Certificates are now able to apply for permanent residency once they have reached at least eight years of continuous residence in the Cayman Islands. The Certificate for Specialist Caregivers adds a fourth option in the immigration regime that allows a caregiver to apply for a five year extension to continue working for the same family.
The extension lasts only as long as the caregiver works for the same person or family and it cannot be transferred to another individual. Also, if the elderly, sick or disabled person dies, or if the condition of an ill or disabled individual improves, the caregiver’s permit ends.
“The re-establishment of the Certificate and the amendments are about compassion for our elderly, infirmed and disabled, giving them and their families’ peace of mind that their care will be continued by someone who is known to them and who helps maintain their quality of life,” said Premier and Minister for Home Affairs Hon. Alden McLaughlin. “It is one way this Government is showing sympathy and compassion to those weakest in society who need the special care, as well as their families, and also to those who provide the much needed assistance.”
