KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday July 15, 2015 – Lawmen already have two suspects in custody for last night’s murder of a 24-year-old policewoman.

Constable Crystal Thomas had left work at the Denham Town Police Station in the capital and boarded a bus to go home. She walked into a robbery in progress and when she confronted the culprits she was shot dead.

“Our work late last night and early this morning has led to the capture of two men who we believe were part of the group which murdered the young constable,” Assistant Commissioner of Police George Quallo said this morning. “At this time we are not naming the suspects as interviews have to be done and also identification parades.”

He told the media that the officer’s death was a blow to the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

“This is indeed a sad time for the Constabulary losing such a young member of the organization under such tragic circumstances,” Quallo said.

Some of her former colleagues described her as a hardworking individual who always tried to lead by example, according to the Jamaica Observer.

Her murder also sparked renewed concern about the lack of transportation for police officers at the end of their shifts.

Police Federation chairman Sergeant Raymond Wilson told the Jamaica Gleaner that officers had been lobbying the government on the matter for the past five years, noting that while some groups of public sector workers are provided with transportation to and from work, police personnel who have a sensitive and dangerous job, do not have that privilege.
