Immigration Department Closure On 31 July 2015
The Department of Immigration Headquarters, including Passport & Corporate Services, Visa Office and Front Counter, will be closed to the public for all but essential services on Friday, 31 July 2015. Only work permit and permanent residence applications (including applications for permission to continue to work (PCW)) that must be submitted prior to 1 August in order to allow continued employment will be accepted.
Time sensitive applications for visitor extensions will also be accepted.
The Passport & Corporate Services Office will not accept any applications but passports and visa waivers may be collected at the Immigration main counter location.
The Department will resume normal operations on Monday, 3 August and will also remain open to the public until 7.00pm on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July.
The Department apologizes for any inconvenience the closure on 31 July may cause.

Free hepatitis B, C testing offered
As part of World Hepatitis Day observance on Tuesday, 28 July 2015, the Cayman Islands Hospital will offer free Hepatitis B and C testing from 9 am to 1 pm.

12 Persons homeless after major fire in Cayman Islands
A major fire started out around 9:30pm on Friday (24) night in Anthony Drive, Windsor Park, George Town, Grand Cayman.
The fire engulfed three attached properties and was fought by over a dozen firefighters.
The fire causes extensive damage to the three houses and as a result 12 persons are homeless.
There are no reports of injuries to persons and the cause of the fire is unknown.

11 people charged with murdering prominent attorney in T&T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago police Saturday confirmed that 11 people have been charged with the murder of former special prosecutor Dana Seetahal, who was gunned down as she left a casino during the early hours of May 4 last year.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Glen Hackett named the 11 people as Rajaee Ali 25, Devon Cummings 29, Ishmael Ali 30, Ricardo Stewart 30, Earl Richards 48, Stefan Cummings 23, Gareth Wiseman, Hamid Ali 34, Kevin Parkinson 28, Leston Gonsales 25, and Roget Boucher 29.
They are expected to appear in the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Earlier this week, police had detained a number of people, including Yasin Abu Bakr, the leader of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen group who had staged an unsuccessful coup against the then ANR Robinson Government on July 27, 1990.
Bakr was released without any charges being laid against him.
Hackett, who apologised to the Seetahal family over the concerns which arose over the lengthy investigation, said a cold case team has been set up to conduct investigations into unsolved murders.
A reward of more than one million dollars (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents) had been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) in the Seetahal murder.
Cayman Islands DPSC report 911 calls increase
The Department of Public Safety Communications released its annual report for the period from July 2014 through June 2015. The document can be accessed on the department’s website at www.911.gov.ky .
The report says that the number of 9-1-1 telephone calls showed a dramatic increase of 20.5% over the prior year. According to the department, the increase can be blamed on abandoned or hang-up calls caused by persons sitting on their phone or letting it bang around in their purse, inadvertently calling 9-1-1.
Overall workload increased by about 6% as evidenced by the number of Calls For Service in which an RCIPS officer, ambulance or fire truck was dispatched or a police report generated.
Clouds to mark silver with Cayman Isle cruise
Shane and Toni Cloud, of Ponca City, will celebrate thier 25th wedding anniversary July 29, 2015. High school sweethearts, Shane and the former Toni Williams were married July 29, 1990 at Woodland Christian Church.
Shane received an associate degree from Indian Meridian Technology Center, Stillwater, and has worked as an HVAC journeyman for Ward’s Air Conditioning for 20 years.
Toni earned a bachelor’s degree in businessman from University of Central Oklahoma. She worked in accounting for Conoco and is employed with First Lutheran Church and School. She also has served hundreds of Ponca City residents for over 10 years as owner of Pawsitive Petsitting.
They have three sons, Dalton, payden and Brenon, and one daughter, Shalynn. The couple’s church home is Ponca City Assembly of God.
Shane and Toni plan to celebrate their 25-year milestone with a cruise to the Cayman Islands.

Caribbean tales film fest to honour late Jamaican-Canadian artist Mervin Jarman

The Caribbean Tales Film Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2015, and one of the ways that the Toronto-based festival is marking the occasion is by expanding its partnerships within the community.
In addition to a co-presentation of Spike Lee’s seminal 1989 film Do the Right Thing with the local Regent Park Film Festival, CTFF organizers have also announced a partnership with the Community Story Collective (CSC), which focuses on community-engaged media projects through arts residencies, to produce the Nine Night Party and Container Exhibit, created as a tribute to beloved Jamaican-born artist and community activist Mervin Jarman, who died suddenly in 2014.
Jarman was an internationally-acclaimed digital media artist, creative technologist, and social change instigator. His groundbreaking Container Project (a media lab housed in a shipping container in his hometown of Palmers Cross, Jamaica) won the prestigious Stockholm prize for Community Education and inspired the I-StreetLab, a mobile media lab and workshop delivered collaboratively with communities locally and internationally. His work uplifted marginalized communities in Canada, Jamaica, the U.K. and Australia.
To commemorate and honour Jarman’s contributions to his community as well as continue his important work, the CSC, in collaboration with the Caribbean Tales Film Festival, will be putting on a series of “socially engaged” art and media workshops in community spaces all around Toronto from September 9 to 19, in conjunction with the film festival.
“Mervin Jarman was the first Caribbean diaspora artist that inspired me,” said Camille Turner, lead artist of the Nine Night Party and Container Exhibit. “I am thrilled to work with Caribbean Tales to create new opportunities for diaspora artists to be inspired by Mervin, creating art and creating community.”

Flowers Sea Swim gives huge donation to Cayman Islands Special Olympics
The Flowers Sea Swim team handed over a donation of S54,000 to the Special Olympics Cayman Islands (SOCI) World Games team recently.
100% of the funds collected from the June 2015 Flowers Swim event went to SOCI to help them in their Special Olympics World Summer Games event in Los Angeles.
SOCI athletes are in LA and currently competing from 26 July to 2 August in bocce, swimming, track and field, basketball and football.
Pope calls for release of priest, bishops abducted in Syria

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis on Sunday appealed for the release of an Italian Jesuit priest and two Orthodox bishops kidnapped in Syria two years ago, asking leaders to work for the freedom of all those abducted there.
Father Paolo Dall’Oglio, a Jesuit priest who worked in Syria for more than 30 years and who supported the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, disappeared on July 29, 2013 in the city of Raqqa, now a stronghold of militant group Islamic State.
Dall’Oglio was well known in the Middle East and Europe for his work promoting Christian-Muslim dialogue. He was restoring an ancient monastery in the desert and had refused to leave the country for his own safety after the civil war started four years ago.
Several months earlier, two Orthodox bishops were kidnapped in an area near the Turkish border where they had gone to negotiate the release of two abducted priests.
Francis, speaking to tens of thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square for his weekly prayer and message, called for a “renewed commitment” by local and international authorities “so these brothers of ours can regain their freedom soon.”
More than a quarter of a million people have been killed since the civil war in Syria began, and many have been abducted or are missing.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday the army had been forced to give up areas in order to hold onto more important ones in its fight with insurgents.

More attempts to smuggle drugs into Cayman Islands prison
Another attempt to smuggle drugs into HMP Northward on Grand Cayman on Thursday, 23 July at approx. 12.20pm resulted in a land and air search by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS.)
Two persons were discovered throwing drugs over the outer fence of the prison, with one man observed lobbing two packages over the perimeter wall close to the prison’s Administration Building.
The public road Paul Leach Drive runs adjacent to the prison’s outer wall.
The police were assisted in the search for the perpetrators by prison staff and the Air Support Unit but no arrests were made. Seven ounces of vegetable matter resembling marijuana was found on the prison grounds.

WSJ’s Lahart: China’s economic weakness crimps US company earnings

Many economists don’t believe the 7-percent economic growth figure that China produced for the second quarter, arguing that Chinese officials fudged the numbers to exactly match their target for the year.
U.S. companies that sell in China have good reason to agree with those economists. These corporations are suffering from the Asian titan’s economic weakness, notes Wall Street Journal columnist Justin Lahart.
This week IBM reported that its China sales plunged 25 percent in the second quarter, Whirlpool announced a 3 percent fall and Illinois Tool Works reported a 2 percent decline.
It’s no wonder then that U.S. exports to China slumped 6.1 percent in the first five months of the year from the same period last year. And, “that weakness appears to have extended into June, with the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles reporting a 9.7 percent drop in loaded outgoing containers versus a year earlier,” Lahart explains.
Elsewhere on the China front, the recent plunge of Chinese stocks — the Shanghai Composite index dropped 32 percent from June 12 to July 8 — put a fright into U.S. investors. Many were concerned about contagion — that the slide would carry over to U.S. stocks.
But not to worry, says Liz Ann Sonders chief investment strategist with Charles Schwab. “The recent rout in the Chinese stock market is yet another brick in the (Great) Wall of Worry the stock market generally likes to climb,” she writes in Barron’s.
So what is the connection between U.S. and Chinese stocks? “The correlation is low to non-existent,” Sonders says.
“Chinese equities are one of the least correlated markets in the world. When looking at daily percentage point change, there is no relationship between onshore A-shares traded on the Shanghai Composite and US equities, according to Bespoke Investment Group.”
China also remains a small market overall for U.S. companies, Sonders notes.
Cat saved by a whisker – or rather by three letting agents

Staff from a lettings agency risked danger when they rescued a cat clinging to the elevated section of one of the country’s busiest roads, the Hammersmith Flyover.
Leon Gaskin, Sara Persad and Breda O’Mahony, who work for lettings agency Folio London – part of Notting Hill Housing – did not hesitate when they spotted the terrified cat.
They drove on to the flyover and pulled over to grab her from the high wall.
Gaskin said: “When we saw the cat in such a dangerous situation we knew she needed to be rescued quickly before she fell or was hit by a car.
“We were worried we might scare her when we got up there but luckily she was happy to come with us.
“We don’t know how she would have got up there on her own, so perhaps someone put her there.”
The cat, now named Bridget, has been handed in to the Blue Cross, where chief vet Mark Bossley said: “Bridget is very lucky to have been spotted in time. It could have been so much worse.
“Bridget is a friendly and trusting little cat, who thankfully has survived her terrifying ordeal pretty much unscathed.”

International University of the Caribbean – changing Jamaica one scholarship at a time

The International University of the Caribbean believes strongly in its role of educating Jamaicans for the betterment of Jamaica. The University has been providing 20 scholarships every year for the last 10 years to bright young students who cannot afford Tertiary education. IUC has been fully funding these scholarships.
We get a large number of applicants each year, that show great desire to further their education, but they cannot start due to financial constraints. With this in mind IUC is seeking assistance in providing an additional 50 scholarships to bright young students every year.
We look at our Scholarship graduates over the last few years, and see how many of them have made positive impacts in their families and communities, and we want to replicate this right across Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel beat Barbados Tridents to clinch their maiden Caribbean Premier League T20 cricket title on Sunday. Pakistan discard Kamran Akmal played a stellar role and was well supported by South African Cameron Delport as Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel won by 20 runs in the final match in Port-of-Spain. Both Akmal and Delport scored fifties.
Akmal and Delport came good after veteran South African star Jacques Kallis was bowled by Robin Peterson for 8 in the third over. Both batsmen rode chances and put together a valuable 102-run second wicket partnership as Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel scored 178 for five in their 20 overs. Akmal and Delport fell off successive balls in the 16th over but skipper Dwayne Bravo smashed a 15-ball 29 in the slog overs.
Kieron Pollard and 34-year-old West Indian all-rounder Rayad Emrit picked up two wickets apiece for Barbados Tridents after Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel chose to bat first after winning the toss.
Dwayne Smith and 21-year-old American opener Steven Taylor gave defending champions Barbados a good start. Scoring at over 10 an over, Barbados looked hot in pursuit but then started losing wickets at regular intervals. Smith was out for 49 off 30 balls (top scorer) as Bravo employed his spinners to check the run-rate. Five batsmen scored 20s and that included Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, Pollard and West Indies Test captain Jason Holder.
Sulieman Benn took 2 for 24 in his four overs while Johan Botha and Trinidadian Derone David took a wicket each as Barbados ran out of overs. Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel’s Akmal and Bravo finished as the Man of the Match and Man of the Series, respectively.

Nassau, Bahamas -The Department of Inland Revenue advises the public of the introduction of its new online application for Business Licence scheduled to go live on August 4th, 2015.
The Online Tax Administration System (OTAS) will provide businesses with a simple, user-friendly, online application and payment system. This is the same system currently being used for Value Added Tax (VAT).
The addition of the business licence section to OTAS creates a convenient online experience for business owners and taxpayers. OTAS users can easily complete business licence and VAT registrations in one online environment, at any place and anytime with internet access.
This system will also provide an easy online form that requests similar information/documentation as the paper application. It will generate an automatic e-mail response confirming submission of an application and/or payments.

Liechtenstein disclosure facility to close in December

The UK and Liechtenstein have published a Joint Declaration that provides for the early closure of the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility.
The UK’s March 2015 Budget brought forward the final date for registration to participate in the LDF from April 2016 to December 31, 2015. The Joint Declaration, signed this month, makes the necessary amendments to the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in tax matters. After that date, Liechtenstein financial institutions will continue to follow the review and termination of service procedures set out in the MoU until December 31, 2017. The requirement to issue a Confirmation of Relevance (COR) will expire on September 30, 2017. The final audit of the COR procedure will take place between January 1 December 31, 2017.
The UK and Liechtenstein have agreed that no request shall be made under their Tax Information Exchange Agreement (TIEA) during the period after an individual applies to register to participate in the LDF and before they have been notified by HMRC that either their application has been refused, their disclosure has been accepted, or the terms of the LDF no longer apply to them.
Since 2009, more than 6,400 people and companies have registered to participate in the LDF. More than 5,900 disclosures have been received and the LDF has raised more than GBP1.15bn from settled cases and payments on account.
Tessa Lorimer, special counsel at law firm Withers, commented: “The UK is closing the LDF as access to coercive new criminal powers will shortly supersede the need for it. Although a new disclosure facility will be introduced in 2016, I am certain that its conditions will be much stricter than the LDF’s and would urge anyone with undisclosed offshore assets to make use of the LDF before it closes. Allowing time to go through the disclosure process means that people should register as soon as possible.”
“As HMRC’s information gathering powers continue to increase – with the introduction of Common Reporting Standards on the horizon – taxpayers must be aware that they will not be able to hide undisclosed assets.”
Unrest in Cleveland outside of ‘Black Lives Matter’ conference

Unrest broke out this afternoon outside of the first ever “Black Lives Matters” conference in Cleveland with images and videos posted to social media showing law enforcement tussling with demonstrators and an officer pepper spraying a crowd.
According to a report from ABC 5 in Cleveland, the incident began when police arrested a 14-year-old boy for allegedly having an open container of alcohol, during which, “Witnesses said the officers slammed the teen to the ground.”
The boy was among a group of departing conference attendees who were waiting for buses at stops outside Cleveland State University where the conference was held this weekend. After the boy was in custody, demonstrators were shown blocking the ambulance he had placed into. Tweets by demonstrators indicate the boy was later released.

Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina dies at 22

Washington (AFP) – Bobbi Kristina Brown, the only daughter of pop legend Whitney Houston and singer Bobby Brown, has died at age 22, US media reported.
“She is finally at peace in the arms of God,” the Houston family said in statement cited by Entertainment Tonight and other US media outlets.
“We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months.”
Brown was found face down and unresponsive in her bathtub in her Atlanta, Georgia home on January 31.
She was revived by emergency crews but lost significant brain function. She died at a hospice in Duluth, Georgia.
Brown’s accident — which a source told ET was linked to an apparent drug overdose — drew eerie parallels with the death of her mother, who was found face down in a bathtub in a Los Angeles hotel on February 11, 2012, on the eve of the Grammy Awards.
A final coroner’s report said Houston may have overdosed on drugs and alcohol before drowning, and that drug-related heart damage played a part in her death.
