The Dempster Highway is one of the world’s most expensive and sophisticated gravel roads. It goes 736 km (457 mi) from Dawson City, Yukon to Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Along the way it passes through the Arctic Circle and it is one of only 3 roads from which you can enter the Northwest Territories. (There are also roads from British Columbia and Alberta).

Traveling up the Dempster is a great experience to do in the summer and it is one of the easiest ways you can reach the Arctic Circle. If you are in North American and have access to a car, you can in theory drive there.

Between Dawson City and Inuvik, there are no towns or villages. There is one rest stop where you can get fuel, but that is the only evidence of civilization you’ll see. You will, however, see plenty of wildlife, including mountain goats and maybe even a moose.
