Disney’s Concept Art for Shanghai Disneyland

We’ve known Disney and the Shanghai government have been working on a Disney theme park for several years, but until yesterday very little specific information had been released. Disney let loose the floodgates in a press conference, releasing numerous concept images of the new Shanghai Disneyland Park and its attractions. It looks like Shanghai is getting far more than a replica of the original Disneyland. Also interesting is that Disney is technically a minority owner of the resort; 57% will be owned by the Shanghai Shendi Group, a consortium of businesses owned by the Chinese government.

Shanghai Disneyland will feature six themed areas, including a fully-fledged Pirates of the Caribbean-themed district that has no clear American analogue. You’ll be able to meet the expected coterie of princesses, Pixar characters, Marvel superheroes and Star Wars heroes and villains. It will also tout a few thrill rides that aren’t currently found anywhere else, including a rollercoaster based on Tron’s light cycles and a more action-packed Pirates ride with a naval battle set-piece.

Start saving up for airfare: Shanghai Disneyland opens in Spring 2016.
