Draw determines groups and schedule for the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship
Miami (Tuesday, August 18, 2015) – The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) conducted today the draw for the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship, at the Torrance Marriott in Los Angeles, California.
FIFA Executive Committee Member and U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati opened the proceedings, which determined the groupings and match schedule for the tournament that kicks off October 1, in Kansas City, Kansas. The event was conducted with the assistance of former US national team players and Olympians Brad Friedel and Eddie Lewis.
The draw sorted the eight qualified national teams into two groups of four. Canada, Cuba, Panama and host USA were sorted into Group A, while Group B will contain the defending Olympic and CONCACAF Champion, Mexico, as well as Haiti and Honduras, in addition to a third qualifying nation from Central America, which will be determined in a playoff between Costa Rica and Guatemala.
The Stub Hub Center in Carson, CA, Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS and Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado will each play host to group phase doubleheaders. The semifinals, third-place match and the final will be played at the Rio Tinto Stadium, in Sandy, Utah.
The championship will qualify two CONCACAF national teams to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The third place finisher in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship will advance to a playoff against CONMEBOL’s Colombia, second place finisher in South America’s Youth Football Championship.
