Lamborghini’s Huracán Spyder

It’s a nippy 56 degrees Fahrenheit at the Frankfurt Auto Show — hardly convertible weather. Despite that, though, Italian supercar-maker Lamborghini is putting its hot-blooded bona fides to the test and going top-down in Germany with its latest creation, the Huracán Spyder.

Just like its hard-topped brother, the ‘standard’ Huracán, the Spyder is swiftly propelled into the sunset by a naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10, making a prodigious 610-horsepower. In fact, with its stout all-wheel drive system spinning at full rev, the Huracán Spyder will do a 0-60 mph run in an equilibrium-scrambling 3.4 seconds on the way to its 201-mph top speed.

It’s not all brutal, raging bull, however; the Spyder does quite literally have a softer side, after all. The new electrohydraulic, lightweight soft-top — offered in either black, brown, or red — opens with the push of a button in just 17 seconds up to speeds of 31 mph and lets more than just the elements in to the carbon-clad cabin; it lets the cries of that sonorous V10 in as well, which alone should be able to warm the bodies of wind-chilled passengers.

Keen onlookers will notice that the Huracán Spyder benefits from a different silhouette than the coupe version — even with the top up. With the top down, however, it’s even more visually dynamic. Two rear fins rise into place when the roof is opened. More than giving the convertible a distinctive sideview, they also reduce interior wind turbulence when the top is down with the help of an integrated duct.

Since the Huracán Spyder is carved from carbon fiber and aluminum, little chassis rigidity is lost when inviting the open air into the cabin. In fact, this new Spyder has 40% more torsional rigidity (and 50% more downforce) than its predecessor, the Gallardo.

Though undeniably distinctive in its own right, Huracán Spyder enters a virtually crowded convertible supercar segment. Accordingly, it will go toe to Italian toe against the recently-unveiled Ferrari 488 Spider and the aging McLaren 570S Spider for the title of the sunburn-mobile of choice for the world’s super-wealthy.
