Every ribbon makes a difference

DSC00821Brenda Tibbetts Lund 5k & 10k Memorial Run/Walk – every ribbon makes a difference

GRAND CAYMAN, OCTOBER 11, 2015: 0n Sunday, October 11, over 600 walkers and runners turned out for the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens’ (LCTG) annual Brenda Tibbetts-Lund 5K & 10K Memorial Run/Walk which was held at the Holiday Inn Resort. The event was a resounding success as was seen by the display of pink as the participants ran or walked the race route from the Holiday Inn Resort to the Safehaven Road junction with Easterly Tibbetts Highway and back to the Holiday Inn Resort.

Medals were given to the first hundred walkers and trophies were given to the runners for first, second and third place in different age categories. An airline ticket to Tampa courtesy of Cayman Airways, a smartphone from Flow and a champagne brunch for 2 from the Westin Casuarina Resort were just a few of the spot prizes that were given to some lucky participants.

Now a firm fixture on the events calendar, the memorial run/walk is in its 18th year. Organized in memory of Brenda Tibbetts Lund who lost her battle with breast cancer, this event seeks to raise funds to support breast cancer education, screening and treatment; integral components in the club’s breast cancer awareness campaign. The objectives of the campaign is to increase the number of mammogram vouchers available to women who might not have sufficient insurance to afford to do this procedure; increase the level of support to victims and their families; and expand the ambit of educational drive to particularly include younger women /girls and empower them with vital information relating to their bodies.

The event also celebrated breast cancer survivors who got the opportunity to interact with fellow survivors in a special tent sponsored by Remax Cayman. The survivors were treated to breakfast and massages and it was inspiring to see the interaction between them, their family members and participants in the run/walk.

Co-chairs of the Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, Lions Norma McField, PMJF and Wendy Wiltshire, MJF noted that this year’s theme “every ribbon makes a difference” was reflected in the campaign’s achievements over the year. They noted that over 9,000 mammogram vouchers, sponsored by the Club, have enabled women to proactively assess their breast health; over 55,000 persons have benefited from educational programs; and approximately 275 individuals have been meaningfully assisted with health care and other related costs, both at home and overseas.

President Clint Powery thanked the participants for their continued support of the event and also expressed his appreciation to the many sponsors: Remax Ltd, Cayman Water Company, Cayman National Bank, Davenport Development, Kensington Management, Cayman Islands Government – Health Ministry, Flow, Kaibo, Holiday Inn Resort, Cayman Airways, Cutting Edge, Quick Images, CITN, Radio Cayman, Cayman Compass Newspaper, Baptist Health Systems, Holy Cross Hospital, Foster’s Food Fair, Hurley’s Market, Kirk Market, Fiji Water, Island Taste, and Cost U Less. He also thanked Race Caribbean for administering the race and the many organizations and individuals who donated spot prizes and volunteered for the event.

The campaign continues throughout the month of October and more information on the event can be accessed at http://www.lctgbreastcancerawareness.com
