Jamaican correctional officer killed during altercation over fried fish
IMAGE: Ramar Bent JAMAICA GLEANER – The alleged killing of a correctional officer by a member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in Bog Walk, St Catherine, on Saturday night is being probed by detectives from the St Catherine North Police Division and the Independent Commission of Investigations.
The dead correctional officer, who worked at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Facility, has been identified as 22-year-old Ramar Bent of Ackel district, Kitson Town, St Catherine.
Preliminary investigations by police indicated that Bent, who was armed with a 9mm Browning pistol, was shot and killed, while 27-year-old Jason Barrett, a vendor of Princess Field, Linstead, was shot and injured in the upper left hand.
Reports are that two JDF members – a lance corporal armed with his service 9mm Browning pistol, and a lance corporal armed with a licensed 9mm Glock pistol, stopped to buy fried fish from a vendor along Main Street in Bog Walk.
While waiting to order, Bent and another licensed firearm holder tried to place their order ahead of the two soldiers. An argument ensued and Bent pulled his firearm.
One of the soldiers also pulled his firearm and opened fire at Bent, who ran and collapsed some distance away.

US media outlets have reported that the all-inclusive resort operator is set to expand into Riviera Maya on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.
A spokesperson confirmed that the company was “in deep discussions” and was “optimistic about Mexico” but gave no further details.
Sandals opened its most recent resort on the Caribbean island of Barbados early last year.
It also operates adults-only Sandals resorts in Jamaica, Bahamas, Grenada, Antigua and St Lucia, with family-focused Beaches resorts in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos.
A move into Mexico would herald the eighth destination for the company, and its first in a non-island destination.

Puerto Rico authorities seize half a million dollars inside shipping container
From Caribbean News Now
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stopped an illegal exportation of currency when officers searched a cargo container intended to be shipped to the Dominican Republic on board the Caribbean Fantasy ferry this past week.
Utilizing high-tech equipment, CBP officers examining outbound containers being loaded to the Caribbean ferry selected some for further inspection. During the additional inspection, officers discovered US$518,980, intended to be smuggled out of the United States.
“Customs and Border Protection remains committed to strengthening our borders,” said Keith McFarquhar, acting San Juan Area Port Director. “The currency seized is not only money lost by organizations that finance drug trafficking and other illegal activity. It is currency that could also supply the weapons and the means for these organizations to disrupt governments and pose threats to our nation.”
CBP officers seized the hidden contraband.
Caribbean Airlines Expects to Bring 25,000 People to Trinidad for Carnival
From Herald Tribune Latin America
SAN JUAN – Caribbean Airlines expects to bring more than 25,000 passengers to Trinidad and Tobago for the twin island nation’s famous carnival, scheduled for Feb. 8-9, a company spokesperson told EFE Monday via phone.
The regional carrier is operating more than 200 flights during the carnival season, the spokesperson said.
“Carnival is one of the busiest times for arrivals into Trinidad and Tobago and we wanted our valued customers to experience first-hand the spirit of carnival,” airline Vice President George Reeleder said in a statement.
The Trinidad and Tobago government announced last Friday that it will treat the Zika virus as a public health emergency, despite the lack of any confirmed cases in the country, though it is present in neighboring nations.
Zika is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carries dengue fever and Chikungunya.
