JLP Officially Wins 2016 Elections after Recount

From kaba35.com

It’s official. The Jamaica Labour Party is to form the next government. The win was confirmed following a marathon, official count of the West St Thomas ballots at the Electoral Office of Jamaica in downtown Kingston.

The JLP was confirmed the winner after James Robertson walked away with the majority votes, beating his PNP rival Marsha Francis-Johnson. Robertson won by more than 360 votes.

The new government will now go into the new parliamentary year with a one-seat margin — 32 to the PNP’s 31.

Preliminary count on Thursday night had given the victory to the JLP 33 seat to 30 for the PNP. But the PNP picked up the South Eastern St Mary seat after the official count that started on Friday.

Counting of West St Thomas 156 ballot boxes was moved to Kingston, on the orders of Director of Election Orrette Fisher, after tension in St Thomas threatened to affect the process.

Fisher said at a press conference on Monday that both major political parties had commended him on the move.
