SocGen buys Kleinwort Benson to create wealth management giant

By Laura Suter From Fund Strategy

Societe Generale is buying wealth manager Kleinwort Benson to merge it with its private bank Hambros and create one of the largest wealth managers in the UK.

The deal will see SocGen buy Kleinwort Benson from Oddo, which bought the firm as part of its takeover of BHF Kleinwort Benson this year, the Financial Times reports.

The combined companies will result in a wealth manager with nearly £20bn in assets under management.

The price paid in the deal was not revealed, although Kleinwort Benson was valued at around £190m during a previous bid for the firm.

Jean-Francois Mazaud, head of Société Générale Private Banking, says: “This acquisition will bring together two of the most recognised names in private banking, with shared values and a shared heritage in the UK and Channel Islands established through their deep-rooted history here.”

European parliament to probe multinationals on tax arrangements

By Pat Sweet From CCH Daily

Multinationals including Apple, Google, IKEA and McDonald’s are currently sitting before the European parliament’s special committee on tax rulings today to discuss developments in the area of corporate taxation and their approach to reporting profits earned overseas

Representatives from the tax authorities of Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco and the Channel Islands have been in the discussions with the tax authorities since yesterday afternoon, in a hearing which lasted three and a half hours.

However, the Cayman Islands and the Isle of Man have declined to appear, as have Fiat Chrysler and Starbucks. Both of the latter are subject to European Commission investigations which have ruled that the Luxembourg and the Netherlands tax authorities granted them selective tax advantages.

The companies have been called upon to explain their practices and share their views on the European Commission’s Anti-Tax Avoidance Package and the OECD’s action from its Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) project.

The afternoon session, which will include representatives from the multinationals, is set to begin at 3pm and is likely to cover tax-related state aid verdicts and ongoing investigations by the Commission. This includes the investigation into Ireland’s tax treatment of Apple, and Luxembourg’s tax deal with McDonald’s.

Man deliberately drove into a showroom and went bumper car mad

BY ALICIA TAN From Mashable

Hell hath no fury like a car buyer scorned.

This security camera footage of an angry man driving his car into a car showroom in Beijing, China, and destroying everything is like real-life Grand Theft Auto.

According to Chinese media reports, the man identified only as Bai, had sued the Automobile 4S store last year for selling him a car he wasn’t satisfied with. The lawsuit was withdrawn in Feb. and Bai claimed he retaliated with the car attack after the store’s staff had threatened to harm his wife to get him to drop the lawsuit.

No one was injured from the rampage and police investigations are underway.

Pope Francis names date for Mother Teresa’s sainthood

Mother Teresa will be made a saint on Sept. 4.

Pope Francis set the canonization date Tuesday, paving the way for the nun who cared for the poorest of the poor to become the centerpiece of his yearlong focus on the Catholic Church’s merciful side.

The announcement was expected after Francis in December approved a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa’s intercession — the final hurdle to make her a saint. The actual date falls on the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death.

Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was born in Macedonia, died on Sept. 5, 1997, aged 87.

At the time, her Missionaries of Charity order had nearly 4,000 nuns and ran roughly 600 orphanages, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and clinics around the world.

“The poor give us much more than we give them,” Mother Teresa said in 1977. “They’re such strong people, living day to day with no food. And they never curse, never complain.”
