HBO premieres original documentary “Heroin: Cape Cod, USA” on April 7th in the Caribbean
The documentary follows the lives of eight youths battling the daily demons of heroin addiction
MIAMI, FL. – April 6, 2016 – HBO continues to be the home of the most thought-provoking and groundbreaking content on television. On April 7th at 21hrs*, the network will exclusively premiere its original documentary, Heroin: Cape Cod, USA from Emmy® and Academy Award® winner Steven Okazaki (Cinemax’s The Mushroom Club, HBO’s The Conscience of Nhem, HBO’s White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki). The documentary takes an unvarnished, in-depth look into the growing heroin epidemic currently sweeping America’s small towns and communities, including the most unlikely of places – Cape Cod, Massachusetts – to witness firsthand how opiate addiction has taken over the lives of eight people in their early twenties. Heroin: Cape Cod, USA will also be available on HBO GO and HBO On Demand.
In the past 15 years, opiate-related overdose deaths have quadrupled in the United States. In Massachusetts alone, there were more than 1,250 deaths from heroin overdose in 2014 and today, 85 percent of the crimes on Cape Cod are opiate-related. The idyllic seaside town is not the stereotypical setting to be afflicted with such a devastating problem, but the faces and tales of heroin addiction there tell a very different story.
The individuals spotlighted in Heroin: Cape Cod, USA, all of whom live in the area, talk candidly about their heroin habit, their community, and the seemingly endless existence of getting high while cycling through stages of rehab, recovery and relapse. The documentary visits the Parents Supporting Parents Group of Cape Cod, where parents describe raising their kids in happy homes, only to see everything change when their sons and daughters started abusing pain medication. Receiving invaluable support from other parents in the same situation, they share feelings of co-dependency and discuss the financial burden of having a child cycling in and out of detox.
The film is produced, directed and edited by Steven Okazaki and co-produced by Lise Balk King and Vanessa Carr. Sheila Nevins serves as executive producer and Sara Bernstein as senior producer.
