The murder accused prisoner who escaped from the St. Ann’s Mental Hospital last week Tuesday was recaptured last night.

A party of officers attached to Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s (TTPS) Western Division went to the Chaguaramas area after receiving information around 8:00 pm that Sheldon Thomas/Henry, also known as ‘Rhino’, was seen on the compound of Lennox Industries.

PC Seebaran of the Western Division Task observed a man clad in a black shirt and black ¾ pants fitting the description of Thomas.

The officer called out to the suspect but he fled in a southerly direction, jumping into the nearby waters.

The Coast Guard was called in and Thomas was found hiding under a jetty along with a Venezuelan national, identified as Louis Alfredo Garcia, aged 26.

Both suspects were taken to the St James Medical Facility and treated for minor injuries before their transfer to the Belmont Police Station where Thomas, also known as “Sheldon Henry”, will face an additional charge of escaping lawful custody.

Thomas, who, along with five other inmates who were at the institution to undergo psychiatric evaluation, made their way out of the hospital’s Forensic Ward by cutting through the burglar proofing of a window and later exiting through the nursing station.

Those other inmates were all recaptured by police during the course of the day on Tuesday.

The other inmates were identified as Keylon Lewis, Mikie Hendrickson, Gabriel Solomon, Michael Thomas, and Jamaican national Andre Harvey.

Speaking to LoopTT a short while ago, Prison Officers Association General Secretary Gerard Gordon says he is happy that Thomas was recaptured as he has threatened the lives of Prison Officers while at prison.

Gordon said he is hopeful that the relevant authorities learn from this incident and put necessary precautionary measures in place as high risk prisoners should never be allowed at the St. Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital, as they are unfit to house such prisoners.
