Green Iguanas?!!!

What a Boxing Day swim I had and what an experience it was for me. I’m sure you will all enjoy reading what I’m about to reveal.

Like I said it was Boxing Day. I had finished cleaning my garden; I wasn’t even sweating, as it was a very cool Boxing Day. Anyway, as I usually do after I’ve done my gardening I walk across the road to the Old Pageant Beach area and have me a good swim and lots of diving. Of course my dog ‘Sugar’ knows every move I make. Whilst I’m gardening she’s looking everywhere for iguanas. She stands on her two back legs and stretches as far up as she can, making this peculiar noise just to alert me to the fact that there are iguanas around. Sure enough if I look up where she’s leading me I will see a very small iguana on a tree limb, and with that I can knock it off and Sugar has the time of her life as she chases and catches it much to my pleasure. One day a very small iguana fell to the ground and ran under the deck and talk about a game I watched for the next 20 or so minutes as Sugar chased it round and round and in and out until the iguana finally gave up and the rest is history.

Now on Boxing Day as I approached the old pool at Pageant Beach I saw what I thought was the head of a turtle. Much to my surprise it was an iguana and Sugar didn’t waste any time getting to it. For the next half hour I was entertained by Sugar chasing this huge reptile. Sometimes it would go under water and we’d lose track of it but as soon as it surfaced I would signal to Sugar and she would be after it again. I can tell you this was really entertaining for both Sugar and me.  Sugar just played with it for a while, getting some overdue exercise running over the iron shore and then into the water.  A couple of tourists were sunning themselves and watched what was going on and I don’t think they really appreciated it too much as they picked up the iguana and threw it into the water. Of course this only gave Sugar a challenge again to retrieve this five-foot grey/green monster. Like I said after about 20 – 30 minutes Sugar really gave it what it was looking for. She plunged into the pool for a last go at the iguana and brought it up on the beach more or less lifeless. Yes I would say I was really entertained on Boxing Day with Sugar and her catch.  Sugar and I went for another swim the following day and sure enough the lifeless iguana was still there on the iron shore. My suggestion – if you want to get rid of green invasive iguanas, get a dog like my Sugar.

Last year I had a similar experience. My young next door neighbour sitting outside his back door suddenly experienced the presence of an iguana in his bedroom. He shouted to me and I immediately took Sugar with me and in no time at all Sugar was up on his bed trying to reach the iguana who was straight up the wall. Sugar very soon realised if he jumped on the side table he would be able to reach the iguana. Sure enough, within a few seconds from the bed to the table Sugar had him (or her). One less.

If you care to hire Sugar I will hire her out for a very small fee made out to the Humane Society.
