A heterosexual couple challenging the ban on opposite-sex civil partnerships has lost their battle in the High Court.

By Rachel Thompson From Mashable

New parents Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan, from Hammersmith, west London, were pursuing a claim against the government’s equalities office, calling for a judicial review of the Civil Partnership Act 2004, which currently prevents heterosexual couples from entering into such a union.

Steinfeld and Keidan say the government’s stance on civil partnerships is incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, which states that everyone should be treated equally by law, regardless of sex or sexual orientation.

However, Mrs Justice Andrews — who presided over the case — didn’t grant their request for a judicial review, but gave permission for the couple to take their case to the court of appeal, saying their case raised issues of “wider importance”.

The government is “barring us, and many thousands of opposite-sex couples like us, from the choice of forming a civil partnership,” Steinfeld told the BBC.

“We don’t think there is sufficient justification for stopping us or other opposite-sex couples from forming civil partnerships… Unfortunately, the judge has concluded otherwise.”

The couple say they intend to appeal.

Woman sues EOS lip balm for allegedly causing painful blisters

blistersBy Noelle Sciacca From Mashable

Warning: these adorable candy-colored lip balm pods could be more dangerous than they appear.

A woman named Rachael Cronin is suing cosmetic brand EOS. According to the class action lawsuit, after applying the product to her lips they “began severely cracking on the edges causing flaking and bleeding from the cracks.” Cronin claims the condition caused severe pain and led her to seek medical attention. When the blisters and sores persisted she posted pictures of her mouth on Facebook.

Teen on hoverboard dies after colliding with bus in London

By Blathnaid Healy From Mashable

LONDON — A 15-year-old boy has died after colliding with a bus in northwest London.

Metropolitan Police confirmed to Mashable that the teen, who has not yet been identified, was on a hoverboard at the time of the incident in Alperton. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

More details about the circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet clear, but officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating.

Hoverboards are one of the most sought-after items in the UK this Christmas, but they’re illegal to use on public roads and pavements in the country because they’re not licensed or registered, Met Police said in October.

Using them on pavements contravenes section 72 of the Highway Act 1835 in England and Wales and section 129(5) of the Roads Act 1984 in Scotland.

Earlier this month, authorities in Britain said they had seized more than 15,000 hoverboards that didn’t pass basic safety checks.
