ST JOHN’S, Antigua — David Evans, the CEO of the regional air carrier LIAT, has reportedly resigned after “a heated meeting with the board of directors last Thursday”.

LIAT’s head of corporate communications, Desmond Brown, said in an email on Tuesday that the company’s board of directors will be meeting on Wednesday and a statement will be issued following the meeting.

The airline is headquartered in St John’s, Antigua, and is majority-owned by 11 Caribbean governments, the largest shareholders being the governments of Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

LIAT has been under enormous financial pressure due to unsustainable losses and expenses and Evans, a former British Airways executive, was appointed some two years ago in the apparent hope that he could turn the financially troubled airline around.

However, neither LIAT’s poor reputation with both locals and visitors to and from the Caribbean nor its finances have improved.

Meanwhile, on Monday LIAT’s service to Grenada was disrupted due to the unavailability of aircraft. The disruption affected some passengers, who were accommodated on a later flight that day.

Shut down this company and do everyone a favor. Poorly run, undependable, cancelled flights, late flights. I could go on forever with the problems. Anything connected to a government is bound to be a poor service. Win-Air can do a much better job & does.

Chairman of LIAT’s Board of Directors, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has said that LIAT is not expected to be profitable. He should also have said that it is not expected to be reliable, efficient, or professionally-run as well.
