Meeting with Dr the Honourable Keith Christopher Rowley, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on the agenda.

PORT OF SPAIN (ILO News) – The Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Mr Guy Ryder, is expected to visit Trinidad and Tobago on 18-19 April, 2016. This marks the 2nd time that Mr. Ryder will visit the country since assuming his post as Director-General in 2012.

Mr Ryder is scheduled to meet with Dr the Honourable Keith Christopher Rowley, Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, at the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday 18 April. He will also hold individual meetings with Senator the Honourable Jennifer Baptiste-Primus, Minister of Labour and Small Enterprises Development; as well as key officials of the Employers’ Consultative Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ECATT); the National Trade Union Centre of Trinidad and Tobago (NATUC); the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and NGOs (FITUN); and the Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM).

The visit comes at a key moment for both the ILO and Trinidad and Tobago, since the Director-General is expected to meet with key Cabinet Officials in the new elected Government for the first time. It presents an opportunity to hold discussions and examine labour and employment issues, at the global and national levels, especially as it relates to remedial measures to deal with the current rising retrenchment and unemployment levels that the country is experiencing as a result of the economic crisis.

Trinidad and Tobago and the ILO have collaborated closely since the country became a member of the ILO on 24 May 1963. Trinidad and Tobago is currently a member of the ILO Governing Body.
