Cayman Airways can’t fly over Mexico
According to Mexico Cayman Airways owes an undisclosed sum of money for flying over Mexican airspace 10 to 15 years ago. However, Cayman disputes this.
CEO of Cayman Airways, Fabian Whorms, said the airline was working to resolve the issue that is a problem for several airlines in the Caribbean and Latin American region.
He said Mexican authorities have issued Cayman invoices for the overflights.
“The records aren’t really there to justify it,” Whorms said. “We can’t find those records. It is not that we disbelieve it, but in this case, we are not the only airline experiencing this issue.
“The amount we owe is not that significant in the scheme of things, but it is significant enough for us not to just write a check. It is a point of principle; we have to work this out.”
However, the CEO said, “As it stands right now we do not have any significant need to operate across Mexican airspace – it is not a factor for us at this moment in time. I would go as far as to say that situation is almost resolved.”

About Guy Harvey:
Guy Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, conservationist and explorer, fiercely devoted to his family and his love of the sea. His childhood passion for the ocean and its living creatures not only inspired him to draw, but fueled a burning interest that prompted a formal education in marine science. Having graduated with honors in Marine Biology from Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977, Guy returned home to Jamaica to resume his education, earning his Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies in 1984. Though he gave up a budding career as a marine biologist for that of a highly acclaimed artist, Guy has continued his relentless pursuit to unravel the mysteries of the sea, traveling the world to better understand the habits and habitats of the marine wildlife he paints. About the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation:
The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation (GHOF) conducts scientific research and hosts educational programs aimed at conserving the marine environment. Research includes pelagic fish tagging and tracking studies, reef fish census studies and lionfish eradication work. Britain launches $300 million Caribbean Infrastructure Fund
By Benjamin Flowers From The Reporter Newspaper
Commonwealth Caribbean countries now have access to a £300 million fund (some US $426.5 million) for infrastructure projects, through the newly launched United Kingdom Caribbean Infrastructure Fund (UKCIF).
Baroness Sandip Verma, the UK’s Development Minister for the Caribbean, launched the UKCIF on Monday at the residence of the British High Commissioner in Jamaica. At the launch she announced that the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), a partner agency in the project, is ready to receive applications for projects to be funded.
Baroness Verma acknowledged that the region faces challenges with growth, and encouraged eligible countries to submit their applications as soon as possible so that work can begin.
“The money will be used to fund discrete or visible component parts of larger projects. While co-financing may be used on larger projects for other components, the UKCIF will always constitute the majority financing,” the UK government’s press office explained.
Prime Minister David Cameron first announced that the UK would be setting up the fund when he visited Jamaica and Grenada in September 2015. The fund will help countries like Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Montserrat, with infrastructure works such as bridges and roads, to help spur economic growth.
During his visit to the Caribbean, Cameron explained that the fund will make the UK one of the largest donors to the region. His two day tour was focused on reinvigorating the relationship between the UK and the Caribbean countries.
