National Children’s Festival of the Arts Final Concerts
The final concerts for the 2016 National Children’s Festival of the Arts will take place from 4-6 May at the Family Life Centre, starting at 6.30 p.m.
This will be followed by the awards night on 7 May at the same location, also starting at 6.30 p.m. and will include highlight pieces from the festival. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Lawrence and Nixon added to Cayman Islands police search and rescue inquiry
The two Caymanian Justices of the Peace to be added to HE The Governor’s Independent RCIPS Search and Rescue Inquiry are former House Speaker Mary Lawrence and former Fire Chief Kirkland Nixon. Lawrence was selected by House Opposition Leader McKeeva Bush and Nixon by Premier Alden McLaughlin.
The Search and Rescue Inquiry is headed up by UK Coast Guard commander Andrew Jenkins and will look at the way the RCIPS conducted the ill-fated search and rescue operation for five missing people that included two children last March 6th.

Six games of the CPL will be played at the Lauderhill Stadium in Fort Lauderdale from July 28-31.
Caribbean Premier League (CPL) organisers have said the initial response to ticket sales for the Florida leg of the Twenty20 cricket tournament has been encouraging and point to a successful hosting of the matches there.
Six games of the CPL will be played at the Lauderhill Stadium in Fort Lauderdale from July 28-31, marking the first time fixtures have been carded outside of the Caribbean region, reports CMC.
“What’s interesting is that we went on sale with tickets (about two weeks ago) and already we’ve sold close to 5,000 tickets. That’s a phenomenal achievement in a short space of time,” CPL chief operating officer Pete Russell told the Observer newspaper.
“We know there is an audience there, and on top of that there are a lot of cricket-loving fans who don’t get to see international players very often, if at all.”
The fourth edition of the CPL will run from June 29 to August 6, with matches scheduled for Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana along with Florida. All six franchises will feature during the four-day period in Florida, with Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Tridents raising the curtain on that leg, in a repeat of the 2014 final.
Russell said organisers were anticipating a strong response to the games, especially with a large West Indian community living in Florida.
“I think it’s fantastic. We know there’s a huge fan base in America, and more importantly, there’s a huge Jamaican following in Fort Lauderdale and the surroundings,” Russell said.
“We’re very excited about the prospects of playing there.”
Prisoner in Guyanese lockup starts fire after being refused cigarette

A prisoner who is in the lockups at the Diamond/Grove Police Station, East Bank Demerara (EBD) allegedly started a fire today after he was denied the request of having a cigarette from an officer. However, the authorities have since managed to bring the situation under control.
Reports are that the fire began sometime around noon today when the man asked a female rank on duty if she would allow him the opportunity of having a cigarette which he wished to smoke.
According to a relative of another prisoner, the officer denied him such, and this prompted the inmate to “make a lot of noise.”
“One of them tell her to give the man a cigarette to calm him down because he frustrated but she said that she isn’t giving him anything to calm him down. Then he say how he going to start a fire, and she say how if any fire start she not opening any door that they have to stay in there basically…but the man frustrated too because he just come out of jail and them police pick he up just like that and tell he how he getting lock up for some old robbery,” the relative explained.
INews understands that some family members and friends were at the police station during visiting hours to take meals for their loved ones when the fire broke out.
Carnival’s newest and biggest cruiseship to sail Caribbean in November

SAN JUAN – The cruiseship industry is a vital part of the tourism industry in the Caribbean, and the new Carnival Vista will soon be sailing to the region’s beautiful ports of call.
Carnival Cruise Line has now taken delivery of its newest and largest ship, the 133,500-ton Carnival Vista, at a shipyard in Italy.
The 3,954-passenger ship will depart on its maiden voyage May 1 from Trieste, Italy, kicking off a summer schedule in Europe that runs through October 2016.
Following a 13-day trans-Atlantic crossing, Carnival Vista will operate a pair of 11-day cruises from New York in November then launch year-round Caribbean service from Miami later that month. The route will feature San Juan and St. Maarten among Vista’s ports of call.
The ship’s features include a suspended cycling experience called SkyRide, the first IMAX Theatre at sea and a WaterWorks aqua park.
“Carnival Vista is a spectacular addition to our fleet and we can’t wait for our guests to experience all of the ship’s exciting new features,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement.

Suspected thief discovered hanging upside down from window

LONDON — In the world of bungled burglaries, this one stands head and shoulders, upside down, above the rest.
One unlucky intruder was caught dangling from a window at Nottingham Trent University’s Arkwright building [last year] by two students.
Daniel De Niet and Tom Burdett said they found the man hanging 2.5 metres off the ground when they came home from a night out. He’d been there for five hours.
“I got to the top of the stairs and I heard shouting and screaming for help,” Mr De Niet said. “I looked up and saw someone wedged in the window.”
“He was actually doing a handstand whilst his legs were jammed in place in the window frame. He was in a lot of pain; he was crying when we first got there. He was in a lot of distress.”
Mr Burdett added: “I turned the corner and saw a pair of legs sticking out of a window quite far up. I was in pure hysterics. I couldn’t stop laughing for a good few minutes.”
The suspected robber, Carl Attar, 27, was charged with burglary and remanded in custody.

Her Excellency the Governor Helen Kilpatrick invites members of the public to put forward names for Her Majesty the Queen’s New Year Honours 2017.
Nominations must include a persuasive account of nominees’ outstanding, innovative, or self-sacrificing achievements, as well as a description of what makes them exceptional. Contributions may be paid or unpaid, in one field or several.
Final recommendations for OBEs and MBEs are considered in the United Kingdom. Recommendations for the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour are considered locally.

Completed nomination forms should be returned, under confidential cover, to the Governor’s Office, at the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, or to the above email by no later than Friday 6 May 2016. End of MyDeadline for Seafarers’/Veterans’ Updates
Seafarers, Veterans and their spouses have until 31 May 2016 to provide their current information to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
The Ministry is in the process of updating its health insurance database and has already distributed the relevant forms.
Any seafarer, veteran or spouse who has yet to receive such a document may provide a postal address to the Ministry so that the form can be mailed to them. Once completed, forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, 3rd Floor Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue, Grand Cayman, PO Box 131, KY1-9000.
This request was initially made in July 2015 and those Seafarers, Veterans and their spouse who have responded to the initial request need not do so again.
