Joint Marine Unit Responds to Capsized Boat off West Bay Wednesday Evening, 4 May 2016

Around 5:20PM Wednesday evening, 4 May, a member of the public alerted the 9-1-1 Communications Centre to a small, overturned boat drifting about 500 ft. off Seven Mile Beach in rough sea conditions, with three men in the water. The police vessel Niven D responded and found two men onshore near Tiki Beach, and a third swimming toward shore. Marine officers performed medical checks and provided assistance; the men were not injured.
None of the boaters had been wearing life jackets, and the JMU learned that they had not alerted the Port Authority of their trip before setting off.
“Despite tragic incidents in recent months, we continue to see instances in which people have not taken recommended steps to ensure their own safety while out on the water,” said Inspector Leo Anglin, RCIPS Marine Commander, “This includes a failure to wear life vests or notify the Port Authority when departing on boating trips. We all have a responsibility to ourselves and the larger community to enjoy the beautiful waters surrounding our islands safely.”
RCIPS: Vehicle Stolen From Agape Church during Burglary
We are happy to report that detectives recovered the Ford Expedition stolen from Agape Church thanks to a tip from a member of the public. The vehicle was recovered this morning in West Bay.
Child Month Teen Disco Cayman Brac
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) is inviting the youth of Cayman Brac to a Teen Disco at the Youth Development Centre on Saturday 7 May, 2016 from 7:00pm to 10pm.
A part of the DCFS’s Child Month celebrations, the Teen Disco is open to all teens between 13 and 19 years old.

KINGSTON (EME News) – Track and Field mega star Usain Bolt said his training has been going well as he gears up for his farewell Olympic appearance in Rio de Janeiro.
“I am in good nick, training hard, my time trials are going well, my coach is happy, so everything is going well and I am just looking forward to my first meet in Cayman,” Bolt was quoted as saying by the Gleaner.
“I think it’s one of the big years, now that it’s [his career] finishing, it’s really a big deal, so I am just trying to refocus and get my mind right and just go out there and just execute. To win is always the plan,” said Bolt who will be chasing his 3rd straight Olympic Games sprint double.
Funding opportunity announced for clean energy projects in the Caribbean and Central America
Washington, D.C. – Today, a Notice of Funding Opportunity was released for the Clean Energy Finance Facility for the Caribbean and Central America (CEFF-CCA). CEFF-CCA is a facility to leverage public and private sector investment to advance energy efficiency and clean energy objectives in the regions.
CEFF-CCA aims to provide $10 million in grants to strengthen energy security and reduce energy costs which will help enhance economic development in the Caribbean and Central America.
“We are excited to have reached this important milestone. We look forward to partnering with project sponsors in the region to advance priority clean energy projects,” said Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Nathan Younge.
CEFF-CCA is a collaborative inter-agency effort drawing upon the expertise of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, U.S. Agency for International Development and Department of State.
This funding opportunity will remain open until March 31, 2017, or until funds have been completely allocated, whichever occurs first.

Cayman Islands: Teen Pregnancy Awareness Booth Aims to Educate Youth
The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) in partnership with the Family Resource Centre (FRC) will host a Teen Pregnancy Awareness Booth at the Batabano Parade and Street Event on Saturday 7 May, 2016.
The booth which will be located in down town George Town is aimed at educating young people of the adverse consequences of teen pregnancy.
Representatives from both entities talk to teenagers on the “I am Worth the Wait” Campaign and Child Protection.

Queen’s New Year Honours 2017
Members of the public have until Friday 6 May 2016 to recommend Royal Honours for persons who have made outstanding contributions to Caymanian society.
Her Excellency the Governor Helen Kilpatrick invites members of the public to put forward names for Her Majesty the Queen’s New Year Honours 2017.
Nominations must include a persuasive account of nominees’ outstanding, innovative, or self-sacrificing achievements, as well as a description of what makes them exceptional. Contributions may be paid or unpaid, in one field or several.
Final recommendations for OBEs and MBEs are considered in the United Kingdom. Recommendations for the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour are considered locally.

Completed nomination forms should be returned, under confidential cover, to the Governor’s Office, at the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue, or to the above email by no later than Friday 6 May 2016. End of May Deadline for Seafarers’/Veterans’ Updates
Seafarers, Veterans and their spouses have until 31 May 2016 to provide their current information to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.
The Ministry is in the process of updating its health insurance database and has already distributed the relevant forms.
Any seafarer, veteran or spouse who has yet to receive such a document may provide a postal address to the Ministry so that the form can be mailed to them. Once completed, forms may be dropped off or mailed to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, 3rd Floor Government Administration Building, Elgin Avenue, Grand Cayman, PO Box 131, KY1-9000.
This request was initially made in July 2015 and those Seafarers, Veterans and their spouse who have responded to the initial request need not do so again.

The Shelter Operations 2016 Hurricane Training for Shelter Managers & District Representatives Volunteers for this year’s Hurricane Season will be held over two days on Wednesday 25 May and Thursday 26 May at the Prospect Primary School Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Registration begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.
All volunteers MUST complete both days of training.
