Proactive Police Stop Results in Arrest and Recovery of Car Stolen the Same Night
Just before midnight last night, 9 June, officers conducting radar duties along West Bay Road observed a red Honda Civic proceeding in a suspicious manner. Officers then stopped the vehicle, using their lights and siren. The driver was alone in the car. As officers approached the vehicle on foot, the driver sped away at a high speed towards West Bay along Esterly Tibbetts Highway. Officers then followed the vehicle, which was speeding and being driven in a dangerous manner.
At the Yacht Drive Roundabout the driver lost control of the vehicle and it stalled. The driver, a man, then exited the vehicle, running on foot toward West Bay Road in the direction of Tiki Beach. A foot pursuit ensued, during which the man was overtaken and resisted police, but was arrested on suspicion of Dangerous Driving, Resisting Arrest and DUI.
While the man was being booked into custody, officers learned from the 9-1-1 Communication Centre that the vehicle he had been driving had just been reported stolen from the parking lot of a George Town bar.
The man, age 26, of West Bay, was further arrested on suspicion of Theft, Damage to Property, Driving with an Expired License and Driving without Insurance.
The man is in Police Custody.
