Beach clean up for turtle conservation
Around a hundred people signed up for a big Miller Lite beach clean up at Barkers, Bodden Town and North Side, all for turtle conservation. “We raised more than CI$900,” said Maya Ogorzalek, marketing manager at Cayman Distributors and Miller Lite the company responsible for the new turtle conservation initiative. The lager company has just released a new can, which features a turtle picture, with proceeds going to help turtles.
“The beach clean up is the first of things we will do to get the local community involved in helping the environment and more aware about turtle conservation,” Ms Ogorzalek said.
“We provided bags and gloves and a special Tee – shirt, and charged 10 dollars to take part. More than CI$900 dollars was raised, and that money will be donated to Widecast, a Caribbean-wide organization that takes care of turtles. Widecast are represented here by the Department of the Environment (DOE) and DOE officials came and helped with the clean-up,” she said.
“We are doing some more beach cleanups and also underwater cleanups as well and all the money raised will go to turtle conservation here. The money will go to buying essential equipment, such as special lightbulbs that don’t harm the turtles’ eyes and beach signage, and equipment for nest protection,’ Ms Ogorzalek said.
