Clifton Hunter High School (CHHS) celebrated excellence at its graduation on Thursday 23 June 2016.

At the ceremony Deputy Governor, Hon. Franz Manderson, presented awards to talented young Caymanians Corey Lyn and Catherine Marika Scotland.

Corey Lyn received the Governor’s Award, which is given to a student that has shown significant improvement in all aspects of his or her school life in the past two years. Staff and faculty of CHHS voted for Mr Lyn because of his dedicated efforts in all subjects and his tremendous commitment to succeed.

Meanwhile Clifton Hunter’s Head Girl Marika Scotland collected the first Deputy Governor’s Award. This prize goes to a student who has demonstrated both strong commitment to community service and exemplary leadership within the school community. It includes a generous cash amount and a paid summer internship with the Government.

The Save Our Youth (SOY) Foundation also recognised Miss. Scotland for community service.

“We are so proud of this year’s graduating class who are building academic success” says CHHS principal Pauline Beckford. “Corey and Marika are two very deserving students each with their own uniqueness. They truly live up to the school’s motto, ‘Only the Best’. We are delighted they have been recognised in this way.”

Keynote speaker Gloria McField Nixon, Chief Office of the Portfolio of the Civil Service, reminded students that “it is not the most talented that wins the day but rather the most committed.”

Ms. McField highlighted the achievements of Caymanians from different generations; such as national Hero Sybil McLaughlin, filmmaker Frank E. Flowers, actress Grace Gealey and Captain Harris McCoy, to show young people how others have achieved their dreams through hard work.

She also drew on her own experiences within the civil service where she has been encouraged to challenge the
status quo and provide a different perspective.

A total of 141 students received their diplomas at the ceremony, and 49 graduated with honours.
