Cayman Islands: Wiltshire overpowers Fernandes for Girls’ U-19 Caribbean squash title
GUYANA’S Larissa Wiltshire powered her way to a title in the Girls’ Under-19 category after defeating top seed Taylor Fernandes. Paige Fernandes picked up the Girls’ Under-11 win and Shomari Wiltshire successfully defended his Boys’ Under-13 title when the finals in the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships were played on Sunday night at South Sound Squash Club in the Cayman Islands.
Guyana ended with three gold and two silver medals as the curtain came down on the individual segment of the Championships. The team segment was set to begin last evening.
Apart from Taylor, Kirsten Gomes also ended in second place after she lost 14-12, 11-7, 11-2 to Barbados Sumaira Suleman in the Girls’ U-13 final.
In the tough Girls’ U-19 battle, Larissa had to dig deep to overcome Taylor, Guyana’s reigning Girls’ U-19 national champion. It was earlier this year that Taylor got the national title after beating Wiltshire, but in Sunday’s rematch a determined Larissa conquered Fernandes before a capacity crowd.
Wiltshire managed a four-set win over Taylor, in her last year at the competition, in a game that ended 6-11, 11-7, 11-3, 12-10, giving Wiltshire her first junior Caribbean title.
Larissa’s victory followed that of her sibling Shomari, who continued his tone of easy wins as he disposed of Barbados’ Darien Benn 3-0 (11-1, 11-2, 11-3), collecting his second consecutive title at the Championships.
In the newly introduced Under-11 category, Paige took the inaugural title as she overthrew OECS’ Darci Reich 11-4, 12-10, 11-2.
The Guyana players now move on to focus their energy on defeating the other countries in the team competition, where Guyana are the defending overall champions, as well as the Boys’ team defending champions.
The Guyana team is going after their 12th consecutive Team title. Meanwhile if the Boys’ team prevail they will capture
