Inmates go tech savvy and Blues under Spotlight

The week starting Monday, 30 January, GIS Spotlight captures inmates learning, orchids blooming and Blue Iguanas resurging.

A common criticism for merely incarcerating wrongdoers is prison is just a revolving door – they are in and out with little positive effect. They are not equipped with the right tools so they don’t reoffend. First stop, we take you inside Northward Prison to see what is being done to combat that. Join us to see positive action underway to help rehabilitate inmates.

Learn how tertiary education institutions have joined hands with a leading law firm to provide inmates with computer knowledge to help them become productive members of the community. Listen to the educators outline the benefits of the programme that packs so much potential.

After that, we transport you to the wonderful world of orchids. The colour-drenched annual orchid show is just round the corner at the QEII Botanic Park. Come with us to discover what is in store this year for orchid aficionados, nature lovers and everyone looking for something interesting to do.

Finally, reacquaint yourself with Grand Cayman’s unique Blue Iguanas whose future now looks cautiously optimistic after the species was classified functionally extinct in the wild just a decade ago. See how a diligent recovery programme is counting its accomplishments one iguana at a time. Hear what more has to be done to ensure generations now and into the future can celebrate the Blues always.

Produced by Government Information Services, GIS Spotlight highlights government services and solutions regarding issues that concern and affect you.

The weekly programme now airs on Cayman27 at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. All stories seen in this week’s show can also be found on the GIS Marketing and Communications website: www.gis.ky.

Comments and suggestions about the programme are always welcome. Viewers can provide feedback by e-mailing [email protected].
