The Spring 2017 Cayman Islands Labour Force Survey Starts on Sunday March 5th
he Economics and Statistics Office (ESO) will commence the Labour Force Survey (LFS) for Spring 2017 on Sunday (March 5th).
The LFS seeks to collect data on the employed and unemployed persons in the Cayman Islands, as well as those who are not in the labour force.
The last publicly available LFS Report was the Spring 2016 LFS, which revealed that the labour force comprised of 41,825 persons of which, 40,213 were employed while 1,612 were unemployed. The unemployment rate was estimated at 3.9 percent, the lowest since the 3.0 percent recorded in 2007.
Trained interviewers from the ESO will visit a total of 1,392 randomly selected sample households in the three Islands over a four-week period. The LFS questionnaire will be administered using tablets (electronic).
Once again, the ESO appeals to the public to give its full cooperation to the interviewers and to provide the necessary information, which will be collected under the Statistics Law (2016 Revision). The interviews are confidential, and no individual data will be used for publication or disclosed to parties outside of the ESO. ESO survey data from individuals are exempt from Freedom of Information requests.

Maths for Cayman Islands’ Mums & Dads Event
On Thursday, 2 March 2017 the Ministry of Education will host “Maths for Mums and Dads” an event that aims to give parents the support and tools they need to better help their children with their studies.
Mathematics educator Kara Imm will lead the training session and discuss various teaching styles and meaningful approaches parents can use with their children at home.
The training session will take place at Prospect Primary School Hall starting at 6:00 p.m. The event is free for all interested parents.

Cubans repatriated from Cayman Islands
A group of 20 Cuban migrants were repatriated to Havana, Cuba on Tuesday, 21 February 2017, in a joint operation by the Department of Immigration, the Customs Department and Her Majesty’s Prison Service.
Officers escorted two females and 18 males from the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) to a charter flight at the Owen Roberts International Airport.
With this departure a total of 51 migrants, 40 males and 11 females, remain in Immigration custody on island, and are housed at various approved facilities.
Student Stabbed On UWI Cave Hill Campus

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Feb 22 2017 – A student of the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another student Tuesday evening.
Police say 21-year-old Akindele Licorish of Free Hill, Black Rock, St Michael, was stabbed about the body during the incident which occurred sometime around 6:45 pm.
Licorish was stabbed on his hands and his right side. He was taken to the Sandy Crest Medical Centre where he was treated and discharged.

Cayman Islands DCI to Close Early on THU 2 March
The Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) in Grand Cayman, including its Business Licensing Counter on the first floor of the Government Administration Building, will close at 3:00pm on Thursday, 2 March, for a staff meeting.
DCI’s main office will reopen on Friday, 3 March at 8:30am, and the counter will reopen at 9:00am.

Synchrony Financial expands its CareCredit national acceptance network

Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SF) +0.8% signed an agreement with Citibank (NYSE:C), N.A. +0.4% to acquire the Citi Health Card portfolio expanding its healthcare acceptance network in the United States.
Citi Health Card portfolio has more than 14,500 providers and 110,000 current consumer accounts.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Cayman Islands: Drug Arrest Made at HMCIPS
On Thursday, 16 February 2017 an officer with Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service (HMCIPS) quickly apprehended a man who was caught throwing a large quantity of drugs over the prison fence.
Prison Officer Michael Taylor was patrolling the outer perimeter of HMCIPS in the K-9 van, when around 4.20 p.m. he saw a man dressed in dark clothing running towards to the prison fence.
“I had stopped and parked on the roadside of Sheffield Drive, next to the training unit, when I saw a man with two bags in his hands, with his head and face covered in a white cloth,” he explained.
Officer Taylor radioed for back-up and then began to drive towards the suspect. The prison officer then got out of the van to pursue the suspect on foot.
In moments the suspect was caught and cuffed by Officer Taylor. Shortly after, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody.
Prison Director Neil Lavis said several pounds of marijuana were confiscated from the prison’s grounds.
“I applaud the due diligence and quick reaction of Officer Taylor, and the other prison officers who assisted him in the arrest,” Director Lavis said. “I would also like to commend the RCIPS for their quick assistance in the process. In the end two departments worked together to catch the suspect committing the offence and put him safely behind bars.”
The suspect is on police bail, and has not been charged at this time.

South Sudan declares famine in Unity State

A famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced in any part of the world in six years.
The government and the United Nations report that some 100,000 people are facing starvation, with a million more on the brink of famine.
A combination of civil war and an economic collapse have been blamed.
There have been warnings of famine in Yemen, Somalia and north-eastern Nigeria, but South Sudan is the first to declare one.
The famine is currently affecting parts of the Unity state in South Sudan, but humanitarian groups have warned that the crisis could spread if urgent help is not received.
Aid agencies, including the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the children’s fund Unicef, said that 4.9 million people – more than 40% of South Sudan’s population – are in urgent need of food.
When is a famine declared?
Food shortages can lead to large numbers of people lacking nutrition, but only rarely do they amount to famine, according to UN humanitarian criteria.
Long periods of drought and other problems reducing the supply of food do not necessarily result in a famine.
A famine is declared only when certain measures of mortality, malnutrition and hunger are met. They are:
- at least 20% of households in an area face extreme food shortages with a limited ability to cope
- acute malnutrition rates exceed 30%
- the death rate exceeds two persons per day per 10,000 persons
The declaration of a famine carries no binding obligations on the UN or member states, but serves to focus global attention on the problem.

The report on Monday said that an increase in humanitarian assistance was needed in order to prevent the famine from spreading to other vulnerable areas.
“If sustained and adequate assistance is delivered urgently, the hunger situation can be improved in the coming months and further suffering mitigated,” the report said.
Head of the WFP in South Sudan, Joyce Luma, said that the famine was “man-made” after three years of conflict across the country stifled crop production and hit farmers and rural livelihoods.
The impact of the conflict, combined with high food prices, economic disruption and low agricultural production has resulted in the area becoming “food insecure”, the report added.
South Sudan also experienced a famine in 1998, during the war for independence from Sudan.
Last week, the WFP warned that more than 20 million people may face starvation in a series of famines over the next six months.
The WFP’s chief economist, Arif Husain, said a combination of wars and drought meant that for the first time in recent years, aid workers were now talking about four simultaneous famines in separate parts of the world.
He added that despite record levels of international humanitarian aid distribution, there was not enough to look after all the people in need.

Kraft withdraws offer to merge with Unilever

Kraft Heinz Co has agreed to withdraw its proposal for a $143 billion merger with larger rival Unilever Plc, the companies said on Sunday.
U.S.-based Kraft had made a surprise offer for Unilever in a bid to build a global consumer goods behemoth, although it was flatly rejected on Friday by Unilever, the maker of Lipton tea and Dove soap.

Woman suffering diabetic shock airlifted by Coast Guard from Royal Caribbean cruise ship

USCG(NEW YORK) — A 75-year-old woman experiencing diabetic shock was airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard Saturday morning from a cruise ship located approximately 100 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
The Coast Guard said its 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, was notified at about 9:55 a.m. that a passenger in distress was on board the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Anthem of the Seas.
Coast Guard Lt. Courtney Wolf, the command duty officer for the case, said, “Cases like this highlight the importance of cooperation between the Coast Guard, cruise ship personnel and local hospital staff. Today’s hoist went seamlessly due to the coordination between all involved parties, and as a result we were able to transport this individual quickly and safely.”
Diabetic shock — or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) — is a diabetes complication that can lead to unconsciousness, during which the individual has dangerously high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) or dangerously low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

BERLIN (AP) — The U.S. Army has begun unloading dozens of Chinook, Apache and Black Hawk helicopters at a port in northern Germany so the aircraft can be moved to a base in Bavaria.
German news agency dpa reported Sunday that 94 helicopters and several trucks from the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade in Fort Drum, New York were sent to the port of Bremerhaven.
Most of the equipment is bound for an Army base in the town of Illesheim, but dpa says some will be assigned to rotating stints in Lithuania and Romania.
The deployment is part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which foresees the continuous presence of an American armored brigade combat team in Europe.
The mission is meant to help allay concerns from Poland and other NATO allies over an increasingly bellicose Russia.

Beach-combing & Assemblage Art with Chris Mann

Led by artist Chris Mann this workshop invites participants to create an environmental assemblage art piece which tells a story. Bring your beach-combing collection (driftwood, plastics, shells, bottles, fishing nets, etc., to produce your very own work of art while learning about form, narratives, and assemblage art. A Plastic Ocean – Film Screening

Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.
NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.
NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.

Issuance of Cayman Islands Voter IDs Starts 1 April
In response to a number of queries, Elections officials state that they will start issuing Voter ID cards from 1 April 2017.
The revised voters’ list is scheduled to be out on 31 March incorporating all the verified changes and new registrations. This will be formalized in the final list of voters on 1 April. Following this, the new IDs will be issued.
Existing voters will have their verified details and photograph transferred on to their new cards which they will have to pick up at Elections Headquarters on Smith Road.
New registrants will need to have their photos taken by the Elections Office prior to the Electors ID cards being issued to them.

Book launch “Tell My Mother I Gone to Cuba
The Hon. Consul of Barbados, Mrs Juliette Gooding-Michelin, GCM, will launch a new book on Barbadian migration to Cuba on Friday 24th February at 6:00pm on at St George’s Anglican Church Hall, Courts Road, off Eastern Ave., George Town.
The book, “Tell My Mother I Gone to Cuba: Stories of Early Twentieth-Century Migration from Barbados” (University of the West Indies Press) is authored by Dr. Sharon Marshall.

Cayman Islands DCI to Close Early on THU 2 March
The Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) in Grand Cayman, including its Business Licensing Counter on the first floor of the Government Administration Building, will close at 3:00pm on Thursday, 2 March, for a staff meeting.
DCI’s main office will reopen on Friday, 3 March at 8:30am, and the counter will reopen at 9:00am.
