Batabano and RCIPS Public Service Announcement
The Cayman Carnival Batabano Committee, and the Royal Cayman Islands Police, are advising the public of the following Road Closures to facilitate the staging of the Batabano Friday Night Fete, Saturday Food Festival, Road Parade, and Street Concert:
On Friday May 5th for the Batabano Friday Night Fete:
Harbour Drive will be closed from 6 pm to 4 am from the Junction of Boilers Road to Fort Street.
On Batabano parade day, Saturday May 6th:
-Cardinal Avenue and Albert Panton Street will be closed from 8am to facilitate the setting up of the Batabano Bazaar and Food Festival
-There will be a staggering closure of West Bay Road starting from Public Beach to George Town, from 12 Noon to 5.30pm
-Harbour Drive will be closed from 1pm – 12 Midnight from the junction of Boilers Road to Fort Street
The Batabano Committee is also advising all Batabano patrons and masqueraders that the Batabano Committee is not responsible for any parking citations or tickets issued for illegal parking or parking on private properties, or for theft or damage done to parked vehicles. Batabano masqueraders are advised to park at their own risk.

Two Venues to Collect Cayman Islands Voter ID Cards on Saturday, 6 May
To facilitate collection of Voter Registration Cards by registered voters, elections officials will distribute the ID cards from two locations this Saturday, 6 May 2017.
The venues and times are:
The Elections Office ground floor at Smith Road Centre, Smith Road, 9 am – 4 pm;
Foster’s Food Fair – Countryside, 9 am – 3 pm.
The new cards replace previously issued voter IDs. Persons picking up their cards should show a valid form of official identification such as a Drivers Licence, Passport or work ID.

Cayman Islands: Nominations Sought for Queen’s 2018 New Year’s Honours
Nominations are sought for the Queen’s 2018 New Year’s Honours List.
You can send nominations directly to the Royal, Ceremonial and Honours Unit, part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in the UK. The deadline to receive nominations is close of business on 19 May 2017 (UK time).

Cayman Islands General, Civil Contractors Registration Deadline Extended
The deadline for General and Civil Contractors to register with the Builders Board has been extended by a month. The deadline is now 31 May 2017 instead of end April.
The registration deadlines for the other categories of contractors remain the same, as follows:
Residential and Building Contractors – 30 June 2017
Trade Contractors – 31 August 2017.
Santos Announces Great Natural Gas Discovery in Caribbean Colombian

Bogota, May 3 (Prensa Latina) President Juan Manuel Santos has announced today the discovery of a large gas field in the Colombian Caribbean, considered the biggest finding of that kind in the last 28 years.
Ecopetrol and U.S.-based Anadarko have successfully completed the drilling of another well called Gorgon 1 in the deep Caribbean waters.
Both companies confirmed the presence of a new gas province (the third one) in our country, the president said from the Presidential Palace.
He explained that the explorations in the zone defined as offshore continue with the participation of the Spanish company Repsol.
Two more wells will be drilled with different firms during the second half of the year, he said.
More than eight million Colombian families use gas in their homes, while about 550,000 vehicles depend on it as fuel.
The exploitation of the new deposit opens job opportunities for the inhabitants of the coastal towns, particularly Barranquilla, Santos said.

Alcohol consumption has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years. But while we have a general understanding of alcohol’s effects — most people can recognize when one more drink is one too many — the specifics of what happens to your body as you get drunk are fairly complicated.
We’ve broken down some of the research on alcohol consumption to show what happens to your body and brain as you start (and continue) drinking.
When trying to calculate how much you’ve had to drink, it’s important to remember that a standard drink, as defined by researchers, is a 1.5 ounce shot of spirits (80-proof, which includes most standard whiskeys, gins, vodkas, tequilas, and rums), a 5 ounce glass of wine (about 12% alcohol by volume), or a 12 ounce beer (about 5% alcohol by volume). That means a pint of one of our favorite IPAS may be closer to two standard drinks.

Cayman Islands Triple C’s Ena Merren Memorial 5K Walk/Run – “A Walk Through Time”
On Saturday, May 13th, Triple C School will be holding a 5K Walk/Run. All Triple C parents, staff, students, alumni, friends, walkers and runners of all ages are invited to come out to support this event. All proceeds raised from this event will go towards beautifying the Early Childhood Education (Pre-School through Kindergarten) & Elementary playgrounds and the Ena Merren Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The route for the 5k/3M event will start at the Triple C School and will take walkers to the intersection of Mulberry Dr. & Walkers Rd and back to the school. Adult Pre-registration is KY$20 and will be KY$25 on the event day. The Child/Student Registration (8-18 yrs) is $15 and the “Little Sprinters” registration is KY$10. Each registered “Little Sprinter” will receive a special goodie bag. All registered participants will receive a 75th Triple C Anniversary keepsake t-shirt (while supplies last), with a breakfast and prize drawing ticket.

PWD/NRA Conduct Hurricane Preparedness Exercise this week in Cayman Islands
Public Works Department and National Roads Authority staff will be installing hurricane shutters on government buildings and hurricane shelters on Grand Cayman on Wednesday, 3 May 2017.
They will be carrying out this annual Hurricane Preparedness Exercise, in over 100 government structures including 16 hurricane shelters, to prepare for the hurricane season which commences 1 June. The exercise also includes checking and starting standby generators as well as checking cistern levels. Inspectors will follow with inspections of the buildings to certify the facilities are adequately secured.
Some statutory authorities will also participate by securing their own facilities.
To be better prepared, members of the public are encouraged to create/review their own home protection plans at this time as the start of hurricane season is only a few weeks away.

Cayman Islands DCI to close early on 11 May
The Department of Commerce and Investment (DCI) in Grand Cayman, including its Business Licensing Counter on the first floor of the Government Administration Building, will close at 3:00pm on Thursday, 11 May, for a staff meeting.
DCI’s main office will reopen on Friday, 12 May at 8:30am, and the counter will reopen at 9:00am.

Harneys to speak at STEP Caribbean Conference in Cayman Islands

Cayman Islands names rugby team to play USA South
The Cayman Rugby Football Union has named a squad of 23 players to represent them in its next Rugby Americas North match against USA South.
The away game will be played on 14 May. This is the first of three on the calendar for the RHSW Cayman Islands NMT XVs Squad, ahead of games against Bermuda on 3 June and at home for Health City Big Game 8 on 17 June.
Chris Kennedy will captain the squad announced Sunday. Ben Blair was named as the vice-captain.

The Fyre Festival in the Caribbean has turned into a disaster

It was billed as a luxury music festival with high-end accommodations and top-notch food on a Caribbean island, but now attendees are scrambling to leave.
The Fyre Festival, which sold ticket packages starting at $1,500, is currently working to get people off the island and back to the US after ticketholders arrived to find an incomplete site and a chaotic scene.
Attendees on social media described little to no staff, sparse food and water, and tents that resembled emergency camp sites.
An ad posted to Instagram promised “the best in food, art, and music” on an island “once owned by Pablo Escobar,” but the festival infrastructure was never completed, according to organizers. The band Blink-182, which was scheduled to perform, pulled out on Thursday.
“We’re not confident that we would have what we need to give you the quality of performances we always give our fans,” the band said on Twitter.
In a statement on its website, organizers said the event had been postponed due to “circumstances out of our control.”
The statement urged attendees not to make their own arrangements to get off the island.
“At this time, we are working tirelessly to get flights scheduled and get everyone off of Great Exuma and home safely as quickly as we can.”
But guests described hours of waiting to depart the island.
“Still on the same plane we’ve been on since 1:30 am,” attendee William Finley IV said on Twitter around 6:00 a.m. this morning.
Brother of Jamaican gangster ‘Dudus’ and female companion shot in Jamaica

JAMAICA GLEANER – Leighton Coke, the brother of drug kingpin Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke, was last night ambushed and shot several times at the Hellshire Beach, in Portmore St Catherine.
The police say a woman travelling with ‘Livity’, was also shot multiple times.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Clifford Blake said Livity and his female companion were taken to hospital in serious condition.
Investigators say Livity had just arrived at the popular spot when several men armed with guns approached his car and sprayed it with bullets.
In the meantime, the police have flooded parts of West Kingston in a move to maintain calm.
Artificially bright clouds might save the Great Barrier Reef

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is dying due to changes in ocean temperature, and conventional attempts to save it (such as improving water quality or limiting fishing) haven’t panned out. However, scientists might have an unusual approach that works: tweaking the clouds above the reef. They’re investigating the possibility of lowering the ocean temperature by artificially brightening clouds, increasing their ability to reflect heat away from the sea below. It’s not as far fetched a concept as it sounds.
Most likely, this would work by spraying salt particles that are just large and abundant enough to brighten low-level marine clouds that tend to hover around coastlines. The salt would promote droplet formation and lead to larger, denser clouds. The approach could scale up as needed, and it’s fairly eco-friendly — the biggest concern may be the ships you’d need to brighten clouds along the Great Barrier Reef, which runs for more than 1,400 miles.
Whether or not such a project goes ahead is still far from certain. The research team is starting climate modelling in May to determine whether or not brightening would make enough of a practical difference, and there’s no guarantee that it does. It’s not clear that there are enough of the right clouds in the area. And of course, any effort on this scale would require significant government support to stand a chance.
If the technique does work, though, it wouldn’t necessarily be limited to coral fields. The Summen Project, a university-backed study of how climate affects redwood trees, is exploring the possibility of using a similar artificial fog to give redwoods moisture and protect them against climate change. The techniques developed here could theoretically help in many situations where water vapor is key to protecting nature.

Dynamo Academy U-14s travel to Cayman Islands for invitational tournament
The Houston Dynamo Academy U-14s are headed to the Cayman Islands for the 2017 Cayman Airways Invitational U15 Youth Football Cup, hosted May 2-7.
The tournament features a dozen teams from around the world, including 2016 tournament winners Manchester City. Other teams include: Alchemy DSC (Minnesota), Bahamas National U15 Team, Cavalier Soccer Club (Jamaica), Cuba National U15 Team, D.C. United (MLS), Harbour View FC (Jamaica), IMG Academy (Florida), La Ceiba FC (Honduras), and Trinidad and Tobago National U15 Team.
The Dynamo will face D.C. United, Manchester City, and Trinidad and Tobago in the group stage. The three group winners and best second place finisher advance to the semifinals.
This is the second consecutive year of participation for the Dynamo. Last year, they also faced D.C. United, Manchester City, and the Cuba National Team in the group stage. Manchester City and Cuba advanced out of the group and ended up facing each other in the final.

Southwest has been busy expanding its network to the Caribbean and Mexico. In January this year Southwest added four new nonstop services to Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale. This week it announced another new nonstop service to Turks and Caicos!
Southwest will begin new nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale to Providenciales (PLS), Turks and Caicos on November 5, 2017. The new service will be subject to government approvals. Customers will be able to book travel on the new route beginning May 18. Southwest’s current schedule only opens to November 3, and will be extended on May 18 the schedule to include holiday travels.
The new service to Providenciales joins Southwest’s existing daily nonstop services from Fort Lauderdale to seven other Caribbean islands, including Montego Bay, Belize, and Cancun, Nassau, and three cities in Cuba – Havana, Varadero, and Santa Clara.

Royal Caribbean’s First Quantum Ultra-Class Ship To Go to Asia

(10:20 a.m. EDT) — The first ship in Royal Caribbean’s next class, known as Quantum Ultra, will debut in the Asia-Pacific region.
Launching in early 2019, the yet-to-be-named ship is described as “the next evolution” of Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas and it will be specifically designed for passengers in the region. No other details were announced.
The announcement came in as the company revealed some of its 2018/2019 deployments.
Mariner of the Seas will reposition from Asia to Miami on a Global Odyssey comprising three sailings (Singapore to Dubai; Dubai to Barcelona; and Barcelona to Miami). Replacing Mariner of the Seas is Voyager of the Seas, which is set to sail its first full season from Singapore offering cruises via Thailand and Malaysia.
Cruise Critic members have begun discussing the deployments on the Royal Caribbean board, a highlight of which is the return of Mariner of the Seas to the United States after several years in the Asia/Pacific region.

Cayman Islands voter ID distribution set to begin
The Elections Office will begin issuing its new voter registration cards on Tuesday, 18 April 2017. Persons may also collect the cards from the Elections Office, located at the Smith Road Centre, 150 Smith Road, or from various locations listed below.
The new cards will replace all previously issued voter identification (IDs). Officials will cease issuing cards on Friday, 19 May 2017.

Contractors in the Cayman Islands, specifically general contractors, building- and civil-contractors, are reminded that their formal registration period is now open, through the end of April, as required by The Builders Board Law.

The Elections Office reminds registered voters that the period during which they may request postal ballots or mobile voting is underway, and will continue until close of business on Friday, 12 May 2017.
Persons who will be away from the Cayman Islands on Election Day may request a postal ballot by filling out form B, available on www.elections.ky, at https://portal.elections.ky/files/downloads/forms/2016/FORMB.pdf. The completed form along with proof of travel plans may be emailed to [email protected].
Those who will be in the Cayman Islands but unable to physically attend the polls, may apply for mobile voting using Form C, also available from www.elections.ky at https://portal.elections.ky/files/downloads/forms/2016/FORMC.pdf. NGCI STOREThe National Gallery Store works with NGCI curators and artists to find the very best products to support the temporary exhibition schedule. Throughout the exhibition, Upon the Seas, the NGCI Store will feature books, accessories, art supplies, and kids’ items that will inspire ingenuity and encourage one to make a BIG NOISE with a little creativity! NGCI members receive a 10% discount, plus additional sales on art supplies and merchandise will run throughout the exhibition.
GUIDED TOURS
National Gallery offers guided tours to enhance your experience and offer memorable moments. Led by NGCI curators or educators, tours provide additional insights and tell the stories behind the works of art and artists who created them. Custom tours and packages are also available – consider including a workshop, art class, or art documentary with your visit. We have ample parking and an Art Café offering healthy snacks and beverages. Additional catering options are also available. Tour pricing is dependent on group size and staff availability. The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) has a temporary access road while work is being done to improve site access as well as develop the front sculpture gardens. The access road is located off of Lawrence Boulevard and passes through the F.J. Harquail Cultural Grounds (Harquail Theatre). About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands
Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.
NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.
NGCI Site & Facility
The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.
As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.
