Cayman Islands government launches Whistleblower Hotline

As a vital step in implementation of the new Anti-Fraud Policy, the Cayman Islands Government has launched a whistleblower hotline, which will be located overseas and operated by the accounting firm KPMG.

The service can be used by anyone in the Cayman Islands or overseas, as a platform to report any suspected fraudulent incidents or claims safely and anonymously.

The toll-free tip line number is 1-800-534-1111 and all calls will be monitored and answered overseas by a KPMG trained operator.

Upon making the call the tipster will receive a tracking number which has to be mentioned, should the person wish to re-contact the toll-free number for updates.

Additionally, claims can be sent by email to [email protected] and more information can be found on the Anti-Fraud Policy website at fraud.gov.ky.

Leaders behind the policy would like to reiterate that whistleblowers who use these platforms will have complete anonymity and will therefore be protected.

At the same time, all claims or allegations made will be investigated by the Internal Audit Service, and the authorities strongly discourage frivolous or malevolent tips.

The Whistleblower Policy, two other policies and a standard are being implemented to take the entire Anti-Fraud Policy forward.

Among these are the Code of Business Ethics and Conduct Policy which is a general guide to acceptable and appropriate behaviour for Civil Servants. The Policy on Offering and Receiving Hospitality, Entertainment and Gifts, as well as the Records and Information Management Standard, which governs records and information management and defines the manner and timing for disposing of documents, are also included.

UPDATE: The man, age 25 of Bodden Town, arrested yesterday, 14 June, in Breakers on suspicion of the robbery of a Bodden Town grocery store, and also been arrested on suspicion of the robbery at Mr. Arthur’s on the North Church Street on Tuesday, 13 June.

The man remains in Police custody.

In response to press queries about the police helicopter today (14), the police helicopter was indeed involved in this incident, it is an omission that it wasn’t mentioned in the below. The helicopter crew was actually the first on scene and instrumental to the coordination needed to apprehend the suspect.

Just after 3pm today (Wed), 14 June, the police received a report of a robbery-in-progress at the Lookout Grocery store at the entrance of Anton Bodden Dr. The suspect in the robbery, a male, was said to have brandished a firearm and stolen cash, as well as a cellular phone from the store owner, before using the owner’s gold Ford Explorer to make his escape.

Armed officers, along with uniform officers from the eastern district, quickly responded and caught up with the suspect, and signaled for him to stop using the emergency lights and siren. The suspect did not stop, and officers continued following the vehicle.

The suspect crashed the vehicle off the roadway near Breakers. The suspect was not injured in the crash, and was arrested at the scene on suspicion of robbery.

An adapted flare gun was recovered at the scene.

The suspect transported to the CIG Detention Centre where was booked into custody. The investigation into this matter continues.

“This quick and well-coordinated response by officers has resulted in an arrest which will hopefully help allay some of the public’s fears after the robberies yesterday,” said Robert Graham, Superintendent of Uniform Operations, “as demonstrated this afternoon, we are working diligently to disrupt criminal activity and ask the community for all of the assistance it can give us.”

Anyone with information about the robberies this week is asked to call George Town Police Station at 949-4222.  Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via our Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the Miami-based call centre of Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS), or online at the link:https://www.tipsubmit.com/WebTips.aspx?AgencyID=681.

2 goats manage to get their heads stuck in 1 bucket

BY BRIAN KOERBER From Mashable

Goats aren’t necessarily known for being the smartest animals in the kingdom.

A man waiting for the bus in Lalitpur, Nepal, stumbled across a sad yet hilarious scene: two curious goats managed to get both of their heads stuck inside a bucket, presumably because there was something delicious inside.

Thankfully a good Samaritan was able to free the goats the from the clutches of the bucket, and it seemed like nobody even missed the bus in the process.

Scientists find a way to unboil eggs

By Christine Gallary From The Kitchn

UC Irvine has invented a way to turn cooked egg whites back into their clear, uncooked state. This is achieved by adding a chemical to liquify the solid egg whites, then putting it through a machine to disentangle the clumped protein strands.

While there isn’t much of a need in the home cooking world for this process, the scientific world is excited about being able to separate tangled proteins for cancer research and food processing.

About the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands

Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is the country’s leading visual arts museum and education centre, charged with promoting and encouraging the appreciation and practice of the visual arts in the Cayman Islands. This mission is achieved through exhibitions, education/outreach programmes, school tours, community festivals, and ongoing research projects. Holding up to six exhibitions annually at our central exhibition space, and satellite venues around Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands, the curatorial team strives to create a balance between exhibitions of quality Caymanian artwork with art from further afield. This is achieved by working with a broad cross-section of artists and ranging from site-specific work to more traditional gallery-based projects.

NGCI is at the forefront of visual arts education in the Cayman Islands hosting 25+ education and outreach programmes monthly, across all three islands. These programmes aim to capture every age group in our community from the youngest pre-schoolers to senior citizens, in addition to marginalized members of our community. They combine arts education with enriching creative experiences which foster creativity, help build self-esteem, and provide effective and invaluable explorations of culture, cultural heritage, national identity and community values.

NGCI Site & Facility

The new National Gallery building is a 9,000 sq. ft. facility situated on the western side of the Esterley Tibbetts Bypass, close to Camana Bay town centre and adjacent to the Harquail Theatre. The new development is home to two temporary exhibition areas, an art studio, library, auditorium, sculpture garden, Art Café and Gift Shop, and a permanent gallery for the Cayman Islands National Art Collection.

As part of the National Gallery’s long-term business plan, an auditorium and multi-purpose event space have been incorporated into the design providing flexible venue options for conferences.
