10 of the UK’s Worst Eyesores

Historically, many people from the UK has been at the forefront of engineering and creating magnificent buildings.

For example, Sir Christopher Wren designed St. Paul’s Cathedral; Norman Foster designed Wembley Stadium and Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed the Glasgow School of Art’s building.

But sadly there have also been some hideous designs too. Here are 10 of the worst eyesores of the UK for your (dis)pleasure!

Porth Eirias Watersports Centre – Colwyn Bay, Wales

Colwyn Bay is a picturesque seaside resort on Conwy, north Wales, but one building that spoils the view is the Porth Eirias Watersports Centre. It was nominated for this year’s Carbuncle Cup awards (these are awards for ugly new buildings).

Redcar Beacon – Redcar, Cleveland

Opened earlier this year, the Redcar Beacon is an 80-foot monstrosity which took about a year to construct and is reminiscent of a violet-coloured giant lipstick with metallic jungle creepers wrapped around it.

The Millennium Dome – London

Located at the Greenwich Peninsula in London, the Millennium Dome was originally constructed to house the “millenium experience” and has since become part of an entertainment venue known as The O2 (named after the mobile network operator).

Castle Mill Housing – Port Meadow, Oxford

A graduate housing complex for University of Oxford students, this set of student digs looks more like a prison complex thanks to its uninspiring and colourless aesthetics. It has been the subject of controversy by local residents, as it spoils the view of Port Meadow, which has views over the Oxford skyline.

St George Wharf – London

Architecture of the future, or building design inspired by an architect who had spent too much time as a child playing with Lego blocks? Many people liken the buildings at St George Wharf in London to a number of things, such as a set of car axle stands, or even a bunch of robotic meerkats!

Museum of Liverpool – Liverpool, Merseyside

Don’t get me wrong, Liverpool has some pretty awesome examples of historic and modern architecture, but who thought the design of the Museum of Liverpool looked great and was sympathetic to the style and architecture of nearby historic buildings might need to visit their local opticians.

ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower – London

I don’t even know where to begin describing the “architecture” of London’s ArcelorMittal Orbit Tower!

Perhaps someone thought this would be a great way to showcase what you can do when you upcycle old rollercoaster steelwork from theme parks?

Slough Bus Station – Slough, Berkshire

Anyone who watched that television programme “The Office” will instantly recognise the old Brunel Bus Station in Slough, but it has since been demolished and has made way for an even uglier bus station!

Trellick Tower – London

Here is an example of brutalist architecture at its worst – the Trellick Tower in London!

Hannington Transmitting Station Guyed Tower – Cottington Hill, Hampshire

The guyed tower at Hannington Transmitting Station is another modern eyesore on what is an otherwise picture countryside.
